brake failure @ low speed

I have a 1990 maxima SE auto (UK spec with ABS).
I have a strange problem with my brakes.
They seem to be working fine at high speeds.
But at speeds below 10mph they make a strange creaking / juddering noise resulting in loss of braking.
once this has happened i have to either pump the brakes or press extremely hard.
when the brakes do eventually grab, the car wobbles from side to side, as if braking on alternate sides of the car.
I have replaced the pads, & flushed & bled the system several times.
Any help or ideas?

Sounds like an ABS malfunction. Try taking out the fuse that leads to the ABS circuit and see if that changes anything

Also check the vacuum lines that connect to the brake booster. The brakes may be functioning at high speeds b/c the eingine vacuum is greater, but then at low speeds it is insufficient. On my automatic the vacuum hoses are next to the firewall and the brake master cylinder.

Check for cracks in the hose, chances are the hose is hard and brittle, it would not hurt changing them anyway.

check my website, in the how-to section I have descriptions of which fuse controls what
it's for US spec but might be close

also, check out www.bignissans.org.uk in the J30 section, there is an article on ABS in there
you could try the forum there, I think Pete (pete@bignissans.org.uk) probably has a UK manual, he's a good guy and would be happy to help out I'm sure. He lives in Liverpool and there are a few others around that get together occasionally.

cheers
