Any good/bad experiences with Engine Importers?

Hello,

I'm new to the site. Spent alot of time on TT.net though.
Sad day, I just sold my 91 300ZX TT, but I still have my 93 Max SE.

I was going to rebuild my VE30DE engine, but I've decided to buy an imported Japanese unit. I've done a couple of searches and there are some discussions on imported engines, but not very much on experiences with the people that sell them.

I've got to buy one in the next two weeks and any advice or recommendations would possibly save me many headaches.

Thanks in advance

AFAIK there is no such things as a "JDM" VE30de. All VE's were made for the usdm.

Quote from TOM:
"First of all, the VE30DE is not U.S. only. In fact, when the VE30DE came out in 1992, Nissan actually stopped installing the VG30E in the JDM J30 Maxima and made the VE30DE standard equipment on the Maxima. On the Type-A, Type-C and SE.

Type-A is an equivalent of our GXE, Type-C is like a GLE before there was a GLE, and the SE is about the same (slightly different grille).

Aside from the obvious RHD, some details differences on the JDM include 1) smaller tires - 205/60R15 89H 2) amber bumper lenses on the Type-C, woodtrim on the Type-C. Nissan didn't put rear drum brakes on any JDM Maximas.

Only problem is that these cars sold very slow in Japan. In the three times I've been there in the last three years, I didn't even see ONE J30 Maxima there (Camrys are rare there too)."

I'm hoping he's right. I'm getting quotes from the importers.

I'm looking for the same engine. Where to buy a JDM from?

try usedengines.com Japan Direct, they quoted me @ $1500 for a VE with 30-40k Im probably gonna go this route in a year or two seeing how my max has 188k on it now and Ive put alot of money into the car.
So it would be nice to hear your expiereinces, I got this link from someone who purchased a engine from them and was very happy so if you search Japan Direct youll probably find his thread

Just a tip, go to www.bbb.com and check out the company before you buy one from them, I was looking for JDM transmissions and chose to go another route after almost every JDM company I looked up had a very bad reputation with the Better Business Bureau.

Couldnt you just rebuild for cheaper than $1500?

If you do decide to get one imported, keep us all updated.

In the near future I'm gonna be doing something. Rebuild if I can find a good deal, but I might be interested in going this route too.

A rebuild would be a bit more with all the little things. In addition, after a rebuild I would basically have a new long-block, but with all the old parts. Most of these JDM engines come complete.

I took Davis4005's advice and did a Better Business Bureau search on all the large JDM engine suppliers.
Here are the results of those with a "satisfactory rating":

A1 Engines Satisfactory
CNS Motors Satisfactory
Japan Direct Satisfactory
JAPANESE ENGINES, Inc. Satisfactory
Motorworks, westbury NY Satisfactory
Noyan Satisfactory
Rising Sun Engines Inc. Satisfactory
Soshin Trade Corp Satisfactory
Sokin Trade Corp. Satisfactory

Diary of a JDM VE30DE engine swap - Was: Any good/bad experiences w/Engine Importers

Ok . . . I just bought my JDM VE30DE engine. After much research and shopping, I ended up getting mine from "Foreign Engine Exchange" in Seattle for $1100. They had good ratings by the Better Business Bureau, and were even recommended by a couple of different shops.
I got quotes as high as $2100 from other engine importers.

I received it COD to Utah three days after I ordered it.

The engine looks clean, but I'll reserve judgment until I inspect some of the internals. Tomorrow (Sat) I'm going to start the swap. Right now I'm trying to decide just how many of the components to switch. Anyone with some recommendations on this would be helpful.

The engine place said I should only use the JDM long-block and switch over everything else. My thought . . . I want to use as much from the JDM motor as possible. Why take components off a 187k motor and put on one with 40k one. I don't have emissions testing where I live, so that's not an issue. Everything looks the same, and if it doesn't run quite right after the engine swap, there is nothing I can’t switch later, right?

I thought about servicing the VTC's before installing the new motor, but I think I'll wait to hear it run. If it ain't broke don't fix.

One thing I'm going to do is clean the oil galleys.

I'll add to this as I go.

thats good to hear, Im probably gonna go with motorworks in westbury NY they quoted me at 1275, Im gonna have my mechanic do the swap and while hes doing it Im gonna get every bolt for the engine avalible, and do it all at once

I figure

1300 - engine
1000- mods (udp, Y and some other things
500-800 for the install

then Ill basically have a brand new car, new paint, new motor then I can relax and enjoy my car
