Hesitation at first, now it won't even start

The MAX broke down on me today. Since I got it there has been some hesitation between 2k and 3.5k rpm. I was leaving to go to town, got about 2 miles and I noticed the CEL light was on and the tach was a 0. Hit the starter, turns over but doesn’t start. Tried to roll start it, nothing. So I pulled off, got a tow home and now its just sitting. It started up just fine and idled nice before I left. Now it just turns over and nothing happens. I put a new cap, rotor, wires, and coil on recently so I’m thinking its fuel related. I am going to pull out a plug just to be sure. Should I replace the Bosch with NGKs? Where is the fuel filter in the car? That’s the first place I’m going to start. I haven’t got a good look under the car yet. How likely is it that this is an injector problem? I can hear the pump so that not it, hopefully. Thanks
John

I'm an idiot

I must be doing something wrong. When I got to the ECU, the screw was alreay turned all the way CCW and the green light was on. So I turned it all the way CW and here's what I got: 1 long flash, pause, 2 long flashes, pause, 3 short flashes, pause, 4 short flashes, pause, 5 short flashes. 11, 22, 33, 44, and 55, is that possible all at once? Any help here?
Also I replaced the fuel filter and it still hasn't started. I know that the pump works. I pulled a plug after trying to start it and it was dry, so maybe its the injectors. Also when trying ot start it the tach would jump up to 4000 every once in a while. I guess if I can get this OBD1 thing figured out I'll have some place to start from.
Thanks again,
John

well... to me it almost looks like you're getting a 23 and a 45 which would be 23 - Throttle valve switch circuit and 45 - Injector leak (1989 Cali models only). When you first get tot he ecu the screw should be all of the way counter clockwise. to test it you turn it all of the way clock wise and it will give you the codes from there. after you're done you jsut turn the screw back ccw

would a faulty throttle valve switch cause the car not start?

Do you go to IU? I was a Purdue boy. i hope that doesn't change the advice you give me.

lol.. nope i don't go to iu but even if i did i probably wouldn't care about the whole iu purdue thing. and about the throttle valve code... i really don't know. i've never even heard about those things going bad. it's possible, but i don't really know. is there an autozone around where you live? if so, they offer free diagnostics on the ecu and may be able to tell you more than me. just a thought.
