At first I was gonna say that it was the fuel injectors or maybe even the MAF. But once you said the second part about putting the car in between drive and 2nd gear to get it to go into gear...

You shifter bushing are messed up in your shifter - I have the same problem. I think the parts are very cheap, and you can do it yourself. I have no idea about it stalling out, though.

No, it's probably your shifter linkage needing adjustment. And you probably need to replace your shifter bushing also. But, check out the linkage adjustment nuts first. Both are easy jobs. But, get underneath your car and adjust those bolts directly underneath your shift selector. And then keep adjusting them until the shifter is perfect.

About your stalling problem... what is your idle speed while in neutral. It should be about 750 rpms +/- 50 rpms. When i put my car into gear, the rpms dip down to about 550 and then they always recovers. A tune up is always a good idea if it hasn't been done in a while. Hope this helps.
