I have a 1993 maxima, auto with 98000 miles on it. When i go to put it into gear it hesitates-when i jiggle the gear shifter it finally goes in. It was slipping while cold but had the trans serviced and it's not doing that anymore. Also about the same time this started my car has a hard time starting -not sure if the two are related. Sometimes it starts right off and some times it takes about 1min of constantly turning the key then it will finally start. Please help. I have not had any problems with this car but i am starting to think maybe it's time to sell...

My car did the same thing when i first got it. I believe it is the park/neutral switch out of adjustment causing the starting problem if it just totally dosnt act like it attempts to start. Could also be a 'dead spot' on the starter too. Does putting it in Neutral make it easier to start?
I duno about the not always going into gear...my guess would be worn shifter cable as i dont think they have adjustments on them.

If you've had the trannie serviced, you've fixed the common major prob with the 3rd gens. Will probably last a while now if u keep it maintained

your problem is most likely a very cheap and easy fix...

i had the same problems when i bought mine...

its your shifter bushing...its probably very worn...mine was just about non existent and when i fixed it the shifter was tight and all the gears engaged properly...you should really replace it because if it slips into neutral while driving you will stress out the tranny/motor...

most likely the problem starting is that the car isn't fully engaging into park because of the bushing...if the car isn't in park its not going to start...next time it doesn't want to start...jiggle the shifter then try to start...

good luck...btw...if you don't swap it out yourself...the dealership charges about 70 bucks for the swap...

will not start

Thanks for your input. It sounds like that is my problem. But 1 more question.. Also my car when it is trying to start I dont mean it doesnt make a sound it is actually turning over tring to start then it finally does-almost like it is not getting enough gas to actually start. What would you think this problem is?

Re: will not start

fuel filter? maybe it's clogged.
air filter? check if it's dirty
fuel injector? one or more may be faulty and/or leaking.
good luck
