wow, this is some amazing info. I've been searching for a couple days for anyone who put a turbo on a 3rd gen, then I had to find one that would talk about it. this is sweet man, thanks for filling us in

Good to see you've contributed your view to the turbo camp.

One thing though, the block itself is tougher than you think and from the few machinists who have seen my Maxima's VG block, they feel that it will hold my aimed 500hp quite nicely with the potential to hold maybe even another 100hp on top. Working within this limit is the best way to go.

Aside from that, great contribution dude! Keep it going. Finally you'll be shutting up all those who ask the same incessant questions

Even a ballpark figure would bring some reality to some out there that are dreaming of $500 tURBO MAX...

For the basic Z31 swap figure $2500-4000. That would include installing new engine oil seals, T-belt/water pump, turbo + manifolds, downpipe, fuel management, full exhaust and IC piping work, then alittle extra for part store runs. However going the route that MAX/OD did now that would probably cost around $5000-9000 .

i've archived a couple of threads about the 3rd gen turbo project and this is the best one i have ever read. one could just do it with this information. additionally, what i envision, aside from the engine swap and rebuild process, is that when and if i ever do this project, i would buy another car because the maxima would be indefinitely torn down. i would have to work, make a living in the mean time, and the project maxima would be in the garage on semi-permanent disuse. this is just something that, for me, knowing the way i am, would be a requirement. so i would need to get some car out of the auto trader to drive around while my "real" car was dismantled. maybe i would buy another maxima. and that would be a few thousand dollars.

the turbo project seems fun, though. you would have a rare car.

Nismo is dead on. Max o/d told me the entire project cost him around $8k and 1.5 years of the car being worked on/waiting in the shop for parts to arrive. He said this is a steal compared to a performance shop in the area that was willing to do all this for him.. but for $12k+!! I'm sure if he did it again it would be cheaper and quicker though, nothing beats experience.

If I ever get the nerve to go turbo I'm just giving my keys to Max O/D. I can't deal with all the work he went through to finally get his project on the road (and burning G35c's).

you can do it for cheaper but it won't have quite the power yield that Max o/d's will. so far i think i've spent about 1150 on my swap and i'm almost done. i just need to get the s-afc working right. i'll be running near stock power of a z31 though. i'll make a writeup with pictures sometime soon as well.
