speedometer

I am a proud owner of 1990 Maxima SE. My speedometer is not working properly. It starts sticking sometimes and then it stops working. This ongoing problem please let me know what could be causing this, I thing its the sensor on Trans. that is going out. I like some help on this.

Re: speedometer

I know what you're talking about. My speedometer stops working sometimes while I'm driving. It'll just drop to 0 and I think all my other gauges are fine. I don't know what's up with this, but it hasn't done it in a a few weeks. Hopefully not too expensive and easy to fix. Tell me if you find out what it is.

I had the same problem on my now sold '91 SE, although mine would sometimes shoot to 140 mph (estimated, the speedo only went to 125, at which point the odometer would also stop working. The tach on my new '94 SE does the same thing. I never fixed it, but the only insight I have is that humid, hot, or rainy weather seemed to exacerbate the problem, while I hardly ever noticed it in the winter months. Otherwise, I don't know. I'm glad it's only the tach on my new one - I only need it for redline shifts

Well my Maxima had this same problem recently and I just fixed it today. If your speedo drops to zero and your odometer also stops working, then youo can be sure its the speed sensor.

It took me like 30 minutes to change out the sensor and BAM!! Every started working again.

If you have a VG auto my buddy has an OEM sensor for sale. Hit him up at: fireitupbr@aol.com

if it's the speed sensor, which probably chills on the back of the tranny, that would explain why weather conditions would mess with it. I have a similar problem with my tach in my '94, and banging on the dash sometimes corrects (corrected) the problem with both cars, so I have no idea.
