Bad experience on buying a 3rd gen!

I went to go look at a red 93 SE 5 speed with 120K on it today. Well anyways the rear left quarter panel was cracked, the back reflector and one of the front reflector had a crack in it. The fabric on both the A-pillars were torn and the tan seats were all stained with something dark brown. The moonroof works if you were opening and closing it but when you use the tilt function, it will go up but won't come down unless you pry at the rails with a screwdriver. The guy took like ten minutes trying to get it down. One of the back window regulators was almost gone or something because it went down but it got stuck going up. The engine bay was a mess. The battery terminals were all rusted and the hood supports were gone since they wouldn't keep the hood open. It was so dirty under there. Shocks were out in the front on both sides and the aliment was WAY off. The power steering made a high pitch wail and pickup wasn't that good. I test drove a 92 GXE (automatic of course) and it seemed to have better pickup than this 5 speed. Brake pads were worn and tires had about 50% tread left. Paint was bubbling at places and seemed to have been repainted in certain spots since it was off red on the roof and side. Anyways to make a long story short. He told me to make him an offer. I offered him $1500 since there was so much stuff to be repaired on it. He got ****ed off, ran to his house and slammed the door. He said that he just replaced the tranny and clutch and that the tranny cost him $1300. I don't know. There were also a few rust spots under the carpeting in the trunk. He listed it for $3700. What do ya'll think? Is it really worth that much? I've had bad luck trying to find a 3rd gen. I don't want to get the newer ones because of that multibeam suspension in the back cause I rolled my 2001 max and totaled it since the back wheels slipped around a turn. Any tips on shopping for a max?

Take your time

Why spend the money on something when you may have to dump who knows how much money in it to get it on the road?

If it smells like **** it might just be a pile of ****.

I'm surprised you even made him an offer. My car, a '92SE 5spd, needs front struts, an exhaust stud, and front main seal, which are all pretty minor things, but I was hoping realistically to get $3k from mine.

Try items like autotrader which you should be able to get for free at grocery stores.

I'm in Dallas....I'll keep my eyes peeled...

Nice VE's are impossible to find though. But if you want any 3rd gen SE, VG's arent hard to find in great condition.

Thanks James12345! I need all the help I can get. I've been trying to find a good 3rd Gen for a long time but with no luck. Anyone who can help me, I'd be very grateful. I'm basically looking for any 3rd Gen SE, 5 speed. Color doesn't matter.

I paid $4300 for my 92 SE Auto back in June. I've seen several since then, you just have to be willing to travel. I went from Chicago to Florida to get mine.

What would be the highest price that anyone would pay on a 3rd gen?

89-91 GXE
89-91 SE
92-94 GXE
92-94 SE

Either 5 speed or Auto

For a 89-91, I'd stop at in the range of $2000 - 3000.

For a 92-94, about $5000 depending on milage and condition and area.

Premium for a 5 speed.

yep JD, I think you could have gotten a little more out of you car, but that's ok. If I lived closer to you, I would have bought your car and sold mine.

Actually, to almost everyone who's not a Maxima Enthusiast, the 5-Speed is worth less than the auto. No one wants a luxury sedan that is a manual tranny.

I live in the dallas area too. I did a nationwide search for a VE (92-94 SE) 5-speed and they were usually cheaper than the auto. The car that I ended up buying was a 93 5-speed that the lot couldn't sell for 6 months because it was a manual. He was asking $4295 I got it for $3100, it had 89K. I found it on autotrader too.

An autotrader.com hint:

Even though you can do an advanced search and specify transmission type, Don't. Because you will only see the results where people speficied it on the form. A lot of people just put 5Speed in the description, or leave it off totally because it is not as desirable as an auto.

I think we did a down payment of $225, waited months , then did a final payment of $325 (I think, may have been $350). That was also with $100 shipping charge included.

But if you werent in the group deal I think the price is going to be more. Not sure though.

Also about searching for SE's, ALOT of people dont even know which they have and I'd found quite a few SE's listed as GXE's and vice versa.

That's an amazing price, doing your homework really pays off.
