noisey gearbox!!

I have a 89 nissan max SE stick shift. I just have recently begin to hear a rattleing noise while shifting thru 1st gear to 2nd. Thought it was lifters but after taking it to my mechanic have been diagnosed with a bad gearbox the bearings? What is a cost of part and repair for this job? how long do i have with my current gearbox? Oh, my mechanic is planning on rebuilding my current box!!!! PLease let me know??

Welcome to the club..see relevant thread on this page. It is very likely the bearings are bad. Is it quiet with clutch pedal depressed? Is it noisy in neutral with the clutch out?

if the bearings inside are bad, expect 600 minimum. if it's the throwout bearing, expect about $2-500, including installing a new clutch while you're in there (just for good measure. it's probably time to replace it anyway)

It almost might be better if you bought a used tranny out of a scrap yard. That's what I did, bought an LSD trans for my 92 for $650, +install, +clutch.

good luck finding them though. not exactly easy, and you're still taking your chances buying another transmission from an unknown previous owner. it could be great, it could need a rebuild immediately.

I have a 92 se and the through out bearing just went out and I'm that caused the slave cylnder to bust apart so I am.I didn't make any noise when it happenedor before, the clutch pedal fell to the floor and I had to drive it home with no clutch, I replaced the through out bearing and I"m having a my mechanic replace the through out bearing right now.

I know what you mean. It took me 2 weeks to find one, and it came from Pennsylvania!
