I just spent my whole day removing cylinder heads for exhaust stud replacement. Let me just say...this is a major operation. I have pictures Ill post when Im done. I just hope my car runs when Im done. Turns out I had busted studs in both front and back heads. Ive got both JWT cams in place and tomorrow Ill be puting my engine back together. Wish me luck.

Good luck, I heard that's a big a$$ job that I don't have to do yet but I suspect that one day it will happen.

 

The worst part of the job is the moment before you crank it back up Good luck, I've done this before! Remember to tighten down all your coolant hoses

Hehe... In a way yes, in a way no... It's a PITA... I just replaced all 12 of mine because I had 7 snapped, the only mechanic who would even look at it was our family mechanic, took them all day...
$548 in labor, @ $60/hr

 

To be honest, I really didnt know how to do it either. I have a chiltons and the factory service manual so between the two I have all the info I need. Should be done today. By the end of this job Ill have installed the JWT cams, underdrive pulley, warpspeed y-pipe, and cattman CAI. Cant wait!

They did give you instructions on how to properly break-in new cams right?

 

Um...NO! What is the proper way? The cams came with nothing but..well, cams.

 

I've heard a 400mi break-in is necessary(no revving over 3.5-4k) for "new" cams....not too sure about regrids, but I'd assume the same. I assume you installed new lifters as well??

 

Hmm might want to research a little on the net or call JWT to ask. Usually to introduce the cams to the lifters and bearing journals you need to start the car, quick check for leaks and normal operation, then rev the car up to 3000rpm and leave it there for about 5 minutes or so. This is vague memories of what I heard a long time ago. Call JWT

 

thats how I used to break in cams on v8s but not sure if it would be different on a ohc import.

I just went through this on a 92 gxe...I had to get the heads re built though because all the valves were bent.

be sure to clean everything up while you have it off.

 

oh and I almost forgot...if you havent gotten the broken studs out yet be sure to soak them several times in wd40 and let it sit over night. I did this and they came out so easy it supprised me. I had 6 broken studs but replaced them all.
