LCD Display for MP3/computer in trunk
LCD Display for MP3/computer in trunk
What is the best size of LCD that fits in the tape/cd area. I hear that 7" is good but do you think one could use a 9.5 inch? Also is the 5" really really small, and does the 5" look ugly becuase of the dead space around the Screen? Is anybody selling any 5" or 7" or any size LCDs?
Would I have to strip the entire interior of the car to lay down the wiring from the computer in the trunk to the screen and controls upfront for the MP3 player
Thanks

check my homepage..
7 inch is goo, 5 is too small.
I have a broken one for sale if your good with electronics you can fix it actually, its the 7 inch one from the pics on my cardomain page. I would sell you the whole monitor and dash kit together if you were interested.. There is a short in teh circuit board somewhere, one of the micro chips i think, but the screen itself still works perfect if you get the control board to work...

If that is the case I actually don't intend on putting an aftrmarket stereo under the LCD, infact I had planned to put a touchpad mouse (like the ones on the laptops) in the ashtray. So I wouldn't need that piece. Anyways, I shall forward my application to buy the lcd to the Finance dept. (parents)
and let you know.

LCD
If I had known what I know now about buying LCD's for a car computer I would have gone with a Xenarc LCD which has VGA inputs. Currently I have a 7" LCD in the double din space where the cup holders and radio used to be. This LCD uses a RCA video out connection. The video quality is fine for movies and winamp.
GPS is a different story. Small text is pretty much unreadable. Anything over 12point font and bold is OK but I certainly don't make a habit of trying to read the text. As for the maps themselves they actually show pretty decent. I'm currently looking into getting a different GPS software other then streets 98, hopefully different software will allow the change of the font size.
I spent around 250 for my 7" LCD but I would definitly hold out for the Xenarc at around 550 if I was going to do it all over again.
Most video cards output to S-Video but a lot of LCD's including mine only take RCA signals. I had to install a 20 dollar converter to go from S-video to RCA plus a 20 foot extension cable so I'm sure there is a lot of signal loss from this.
Bottom line, if you want to do it right and not buy another LCD, buy the Xenarc or some other comparable LCD that has VGA inputs.

Re: just wondering
Does anybody here want to get rid of their LCD display (don't matter what size) for cheap. Perhaps somebody wants to upgrade or something? I just want to put a screen in for now and perhap later when (and if) I have the money I would like to get one of those touch screen LCD displays.
Thanks

Output
Right now I use an ATX computer that is mounted ontop of my subwoofer box. If you look closely at my SIG you will see three 4 inch fans in a row on the box in my trunk. That is where the computer components are located. Eventually I plan on moving to a VIA Epia M series motherboard that is a fully intergrated board that will be small enough to fit in a double din size case I plan on building. Check it www.mini-itx.com for more information on that board if you are interested.
Just remeber its always cheaper to buy the right stuff first, rather then buying the wrong stuff first. I learned this with my system. Although I'm satisfied, I could have a lot more for what I paid if I had done a little more planning.
