How do you know if your knock sensor is bad or going bad?

I did a little searching and didnt find a whole lot. Im just curious to how you know if it needs replacing or not. Also where exactly is it located at? Also would it be wise to just go ahead and replace mine anyways before it does go bad?

thanks
-Mike
