Ignition ?

Ok heres the info on an MSD Ignition setup....
My Mustang has a Billet Distributor, Blaster 2 Coil, and 6A control box. An MSD box changes your Ignition to a capacitive discharge style (I cant remember the other style). The Box itself does a number of things, its basic function is to tell the coil when to fire. When doing this however, its signal to the coil has alot more power in it, and it can spark much faster and accurate than any other system. This is achieved by using capacitors in the Ignition Control box. Now the second thing an MSD Control box does is it sends out Multiple Sparks per cylinder. A car from the factory will fire once per cylinder, while the MSD will generally fire atleast 3 or 4 times during the combustion stroke. This creates a cleaner more powerful burn which results in more power, which means better fuel economy, and lastly lower emissions.
You can generally use an MSD control box on a stock setup. Its one of those modifications which gets better with more mods, like boost or nitrous.
The 6A box is your basic control box, while the 6AL has a rev limiter built in which you can set.
If you have any install questions let me know, but its only 7 wires to hook up plus one wire to roll up and insulate, or wire to a switch for a ignition kill switch.

3300rpm and the multiple sparks cut out I believe.
granted the higher end MSD boxes have alot more adjustments, but I believe the Mallory's are around the same cost as the 6A and 6AL.
The Mallory is called a Hy-Fire isnt it?

Yup I hace a Hy-Fire IV C, a Mallory Comp 9000 magnetic dist., and a Mallory Promaster coil. I liked the setup a lot on my Chevy II. It hasnt been on anything for about 5 years now though.
I really only chose the Mallory over the MSD stuff because of the adjustability of the hy fire box and for the money it came with a low (staging) and high rev limiter and I needed both. I think that MSD is a little better quality maybe but I never had a problem with my Mallory stuff and as soon as I put together my Chevelle the stuff is going in there.

wow, Soul Fly lives!
Well an MSD Pro-Billet distributor (68 stang) is a lil different than just the ignition no? I've seen it on one 3rd gen. It was at Nopi Nats last year....
Although it's not IN the pic....its on the left side firewall.

I said nothing about Pro-Billet, just billet
All you need is the Control Box, and might want to get the Coil, you do not need the Dizzy, unless you want to be crazy fast like me (that is a joke )

Not too bad. Can be done on a max? And I have to buy the distributor and the ignition coil to go along with the box, right?

You can use your stock coil with the MSD, with out a problem, its just that if you get the MSD Coil you will beable to have optimum performance.
You do not need the Distributor, I bought mine simply because the one that came on the mustang was worn out and I could not get it run correctly (below 1000rpm) the dwell would constantly change because of the play in the shaft and such. awsm66 may have bought his for the same reason, or just because he needed a higher performance, tuneable one for his application (race car).
MSD's website, www.msdignition.com does not accept online orders, however www.summitracing.com does, and have pretty good prices. Shop around for a deal, either on other the forsale sections of various forums, or ebay.

I've got it in a ignition modification book from barnes and noble and it's in there, as well as any MSD coil you purchase normally has a schematic with it. I gone with the Mallory 6 ignition box and oil filled coil, for My setup, even found a plug to use as plug-n-play with the engine harness! More than likely my ignition box/coil will be setting on the frame near the p/s reservoir. Oh yeah, don't worry it's only about 5 or 6 wires and it's pretty easy to install....even for a 12 yr old!
