I was driving on the highway at about 75-85mph and my car starts jerking. I let go of the gas and tried to step on it and it starts to jerk again, but none of the lights on the dashboard came on. I panicked and got off the highway immediately. I pull over at a rest stop and there's some white smoke coming from under the hood. I thought something caught on fire, but I couldn't figure out where the hell it was coming from. I wait about an hour and decide to drive the rest of the way home, which was about an hour.

The car drives perfectly fine, no jerking, no lights coming on, nothing. I don't even know what to do w/ my car now. I wanna bring it in for a diagnostic check up at Nissan, but all they offer is a 27 point inspection and I'm not about to pay 60 bucks for someone to check my tires, muffler, engine and tranmission sticks. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong w/ my car????

QUESTION: Has anyone ever flushed out their transmission fluid? Is it good or bad for the car?

Funny you should ask about the tranny flush,

because the white smoke is most likely Transmission fluid. I would check your T-fluid level. Maybe the vacuum modulator valve went south, and your sucked some T fluid into the intake manifold.

Why did you ask about the T-fluid flush? If you just had it done, maybe the level was too high, and that could also cause it to get sucked into the intake and then get burned.

Yes

I had the transmission flushed twice now on my car and I think it's defintely worthwhile (I had the pleasure of paying for a rebuild on another car). What I noticed was a slightly smoother 1-2 shift after the flushes.

Check your tranny fluid. Make sure it's at the correct amount. Also, while your at it.. check your tranny lines for any leaks. How many miles do you have on your max? Have you kept up with all the maintenance? (i.e. Timing belt, water pump, etc..)

I checked my tranny fluid, it seems fine. I've never had my tranny flushed though. I was thinking about it, but I don't think I'm gonna go through w/ it. I've got about 90,000 miles on my car now. I had my timing belt and water pump changed just last summer. I was thinking about getting a tune up. Do you know what they do to your car?

Well I just had a tune up done & I had the following replaced:

oil
oil filter
fuel filter
fuel lines
spark plugs
spark plugs wires (didnt' need to be done - already new)
pcv valve
can get TB cleaned out (my mechanic wont do it without a new gasket)
fuel injector flush
distributor cap/rotor

that's just a few things I just got done on my last tune up & my car runs so much smoother...the rough idle I noticed has also decreased...I also switched to using 89 Octane gas.

Transmission fluid

Where and how do you check and refill transmission fluid on a 5 speed? I have a leak, someone told me they thought maybe transmission...the only fluids I see in the engine bay are oil, clutch, and brake...am I missing something? It is the 93 SE with the VE engine. Help appreciated. srm

AY 91 Max

91 max.. did that jerking feeling have anything to do with your foot on the petal.?? because my car does that too.. but like all the time... when ever im going about 60-80 mph on highway... like i think its because my car is confused to weather to shift gears between 3rd and 4th.. and it jerks like hell.. and stops when i let off the gas.. and stops if i press down the gas hard.

I kinda remedied the problem.. by just driving my car with Over drive off.. all the time.. tho that wastes gas.. but my car doesnt feel like its gonna fall apart.. i think i need to get my tranny rebuilt..

Yeah, the jerking feeling was while my foot was on the petal. So leaving my overdrive off would probably do the trick??? But I still don't know what the hell happened and I'm afraid something in my car is messed up like my tranny.
How is your tranny doing? I've got about 90,000 miles on my car, but I've never gotten my transmission flushed so I'm afraid it might mess up the tranny. How much is a rebuilt tranny anyway? And where would you go to get that done?? Dealer???

And to make things worse off, my car won't start all of a sudden. It cranks, but it just won't start. Checked my spark plugs and the distributor cap. I'm gonna replace my plugs, eventhough they are pratically new. But my cap had a few cracks inside, but it's still a brand new cap. I just don't know what it could be. Does anyone have any suggestions??? As a last resort, I'm gonna tow it into the dealer to let them figure it out and let them rip me off.

DONT GO TO A DEALER!! I'm not sure where you are from but do you have a local trusty mechanic?? I took my tranny to A-1 Transmissions & they did a pretty decent job...they better have for $2100. A dealer will rip you a new one & charge around $3500. It also depends on what's wrong. You may not need a complete rebuild (like I did). I suggest you find a mechanic (for the other problems) that you can trust working on your car that wont stiff you. We have a # in our local phone book that refers you to mechanics here in town...I'm not sure if you do or not. Acutally the guy that runs that service is my personal mechanic and he has never screwed me...he has even not done work on my car because he will feel like he's screwing me..nice guy eh?

Dont go to the dealer!

Got to a local garage to have the car checked out. Thye will put the car on the computer and bring up any codes that can be wrong with the car. Around my town it costs about $20 to do and that beats paying Nissan $60.

about tranny

like my max has 160 some odd number miles.. about 5 or 6 thousand miles ago it went out on me.. and i had it rebuilt or what ever.. fixed by my dad's friend.. who runs an transmission shop.. tho the guy who fixed my car.. is experienced.. he sucks.. he rebuilt my accord's really ****ty.. and my max was rebuilt ****ty too... thats why my max shakes when it tries to shift from 3rd- 4th.. so.. like if you get your tranny rebuilt from someone reliable it should be fine.... i only paid 500 dollars for my max.. thats why its such a horrible job.. i think you should take your car to a reliable local mechanic.. dealer dont know what they are doing.. too and plus the cost an arm and a leg..
