Extended-Life Timing Belt

A while back, I remember someone posting about an extended-life (90,000 mile) timing belt. I called my local Nissan Dealer and they said they had never heard of it. Does anyone know where I could get one of these? I've got a 93 GXE. Thanks.

As I recall later in the production line they went from a belt with square edges to one with rounded ones, also the sprockets were different. So it might have been 92 and on for the vg where they did this. Production models within this year have this different OEM belt which they list the interval as 90k in your manual etc. Either you car came with it or it didnt, and you cant interchange them from what I understand. Maybe if you were willing to pull all the sprockets off a car with the 60k recommended change and change the sprockets with the ones on the later cars that have the rounded off teeth then you could use that oem T belt I supposed. Do a search, I think the post under general maintenance that has a writeup for a nissan quest tbelt change mentions this.

Easiest thing, is go with what the book says for your car, I'd go OEM or NAPA.

Good luck.

Yes thats true but it only fits certain years of the VG the others used the square edges and cannot be mixed from what I have read. Do a search to verify. I think the 93 has this type belt with rounded edges and its what was on in OEM in the first place. Thats why the VG's with this type (the last couple of years of VG) say an interval of 90k miles between changes.

Just use the one that Nissan or whoever says goes with your car per their Database. YOu can try and mix and match if you want, its only your engine your talking about if it breaks or doesnt work.

Bottom line you cant extend the life of the belt you have to use the one your car came with unless you change the sprockets. Like I said though I think that yours has the belt with rounded teeth.

You believe in Russian Rulette? Are you wishing to buy a new engine? That sucker could break at ANY time!

What's the for? do you realize thst since we have interference engines, when/if your timing belt does snap, your valves will collide with your pistons, and you will either need a new engine, or have a very big repair bill for the one you have.

I was not sure of that, but I suspected it was so. I'm going to retire it soon. It needs a few expensive jobs done to it that I'd rather put into a new vehicle.

This has been a fabulous car, but it is showing its age and I just can't justify dumping a bunch of money into it.
