How To Check 92 Se Ignition Coils???

Hi all,

I am wondering if there is any test that can be performed on 92 maxima SE ignition coils in order to check if they operate correctly. I am in progress of buying used coils but need to verify if they are alright.

Thanks for your help.

Look in the Chiltons manual if you have one, if not you should get one. You need to check the continuity of each cable with a multimeter. I can't remember which connections you check off hand but the manual is quiet explicit about it. Very easy to do.

Inspect the body of the coil, look for cracks, and dark lines. Dark lines are from high voltage carbon tracking, it means the coil is shorting out.

Replacing the coils should be considered regular maintanance, every 70-80k miles.

www.courtesyparts.com ask for the internet discount.

can you decribe the cracks where and how big i just took the boots off of all mine and inspected them the backs are all fine but all 3 fronts have hair line cracks starting at the tip about .5 inches long i can berrily see them i guess this would be enough to make my car hesitate i just cant see how arcing would cut the car completely off i mean can the computer sense this or what but i will just have to shell out 170 bucks to find out

You have to understand the function of a coil. It takes a primary electrical signal and ramps it up to a very high voltage. If even a portion of that voltage is not transmitted to the spark plug, performance suffers. Electricity will take the path of least resitance. If it's easier to go though a crack in the side of the housing, it will go that way.

I am also having the coil problem, and the stray voltage is telling my tranny computer to shift inappropriately. The best deal I have found for new ones is $41 each at Advance Auto in Appleton, Wisconsin. I don't know if buying genuine Nissan coils matters or not, but they want $80 each. I was wondering, are all six of the coils the exact same part? I thought they were, but Courtesy Nissan has two different part numbers. Can anyone help? Also, do I need to remove all those coils to inspect them properly?

also the fronts are held on by one screw and each of the rears have two screws

I'd guess that they do the same thing, but physically they are different

The parts store didn't say anything about two different size coils... Are the ones in the back more likely to be causing problems because of their proximity to the tranny computer?

Can the coils test out correctly on a multimeter, but still be faulty?

there is more than one part to the coil so I guess that answer is yes.
