speedo cable/sensor???

After a long A$$ winter, I'm ready to tackle some projects for my Max... My odometer stopped about 3 months ago, and now my speedo is wierding out on me. I was told from several Nissan people that my 90SE doesn't have a cable, it's an electronic speed sensor. Then I've been told by a trusted mechanic that it is a cable. Can somebody clear this up for me? If I do indeed have a sensor, is located right behind the dash? Thanks in advance for the help.

i also have a problem with my speedo. when its humid/raining it'll schitz out and either drop to zero or indicate my correct speed. it has to be an exposed wire/connection somewhere, i just dont know where to start.
checked the speedo itself and the wiring at the cluster and everything looks alright. it also happens when i go through puddles but not immediatly so that makes me think its under the hood somewhere. any ideas?
sorry to hi-jack your thread.

i know its not the sensor as the odometer/trip meter still spin, its got to be something with the speedo itself..it only happens when its wet/humid out.

I guess this is relevant to the same topic but my dad and I just change the Tranny on our 93 gxe and for some reason i think its a cable because sometimes when i run over pot holes the speedo starts working again. My dad says its a cable that has a messed up joint and isnt touching. Should i get a new speedo cable assembly or is there a good way to attach it. We tried various things but wondering if other ppl had the same problem. Trip/Odo dont work btw.

There is no cable. It's all electric. Looks like you need a new speed senor or have chafed/loose wiring.

So has someone done a write up yet? Looks like i either have to:

a) Fix up the fudged up wiring
b) replace sensor

Hoping its just the wiring coz its cheap unlike the sensor.

I had my speed sensor go out on me a few times before. I got a replacement from Nissan but when I got the sensor out I discovered that the replacement wasn't exactly the right one so I had to put the old sensor back in. Low and behold my speedo started working again and worked solidly for probably 3 more years.

Just recently it started sporadically going out on me for short periods of time so I tapped the top of the sensor lightly with the handle of a winshield squegee and the sensor has again come back to life.

Since it has worked fine for over 3 years after taking it out and then putting it back in I'm almost positive that the problem is not the speed sensor itself or at least any mechanical portion of the sensor, it is most likely a wiring problem.

Mine just stopped working as well. I am taking it into a shop tomorrow to have it looked at. I'll let you know what they tell me and how much it costs. It used to work fine, then just stopped all the sudden, both the speedo and odometer. Hopefully I will have answers for you tomorrow!

Hope your not paying for them to look at it as it really could be a simple replacement job of the unit itself...

No..I looked around in there for a while..no wires are lose and nothing is disconnected. I don't know what else to look for, so I am taking to a shop.

Well I just got it out and you will need a special set of pliers to get a ring clamp type thing off of the end of it. Everyone should be aware of this, I wish i would have known I would have picked it up while at autozone. Nigfing, the job of replacing the sensor is not hard at all, just one bolt and the electrical plug holds it into place. The part was 65 bucks. Just my $.02, good luck.

Ladies, and Gents: I may have a simple fix for some of you. There is a problem with the stock Speedo sensors on the GXEs. The guts of the sensor tend to come out of the top of the housing. If you look under the fuel filter on the tranny. You will see a cylindrical unit with wire the that connects to the engine harness from above. If you gentle tap it down with the handle of a hammer till the round black disk is flush with the houseing, this should bring your speedo back in working order. this will last a few years depending how loose the houseing is.

The above is only a fix if your Speedo and odometer is not functioning. The odometer has a piggy back plug the goes to the speedo head. For those that have a functioning speedo and a non functioning odometer or visa versa. You are probably looking a replacing that bad part and not a speedo sensor. I hope this helps.

dsantos, I used that info and unfortunately my problem wasn't solved. For anyone else use this procedure because i've seen it posted a few times with it working for some and not for others. There isn't much more to it other than what i stated previously. I have seen and used the tool used to get the ring clamp off (ring clamp pliers). So one 10mm bolt and an electrical plug is what you are looking at when it comes to how it is mounted.

Note: we only have electronic speedo's, there is no cable.

I've found that its the connector on the sensor, it must be oxidizing a little. Its difficult to clean the connector, but the sensor terminals can be cleaned.

try cleaning the inside of the sensor with a fine steel wool. That worked for me.

There is a sensor with a gear on it that sticks into the top of the MANUAL trannys. It has crappy wiring that gets brittle and breaks pretty easily. I don't have an odometer or speedometer either...

I don't know about you auto boyz

A new speed sensor from Pep Boys is $100
