'91 Maxima - Possible Torque Converter Problem

Here are the facts:

1. I had a new transmission installed two years ago while I was on a
trip 300 miles from home.
2. Soon after, I noticed that whenever I was stopped at a red light,
the idle became very rough. If I put it in neutral it went away. I
couldn't take it back to the mechanic who was 300 miles away.
3. 4 months ago, I noticed that the car would not go above 45 miles an
hour. I though it was probably that it couldn't get into third gear.
The warranty on the transmission had expired and I simply could not
afford to take it to the shop. I only use the car for short (10
minute) trips to work and back so I have been able to get by with it.
4. 2 months ago, I noticed that the car would not go into Park. The
shifter just refuses to move into P. So I keep it in Neutral and use
the parking brake.
5. 2 weeks ago, I noticed a decrease in power in first and second
gear.
6. Presently, Reverse works okay, but everything else is gone. When I
press the gas in Drive, it takes about 10 seconds to get to 5mph, then
5 seconds to get to 10mph, then slowly I can get up to about 20mph on
a flat surface. I let the RPMs go to about 3000-4000 (they could go higher) and just hold it there.
7. The transmission fluid appears fine.
8. I have never smelled anything burning.
9. The engine appears to be fine.
10. I am at the point now where I can get around faster on a bike so I
figure I can't do any more harm by opening up the transmission.

From what I've read, I think it might be a problem with the torque
converter. Does any one have any ideas before I open it up? Any help
is appreciated.
