tranny noise (VE 5sp)

i have a ve 5 speed and the tranny is making nasty grinding/whining noises. when i am stopped and in neutral there is a grinding noise coming frome the tranny that goes away when i press the clutch pedal in. when i am driving the noise increases as the revs increase and when i press the clutch in while the car is rolling in gear there a different grinding noise that goes away when i put it in neutral.
the fluid level is fine, should i try a heavyer weight oil or is it time for a new tranny? any ideas?
thanks

Most likely, your throwout bearing is gone and probably as well as the input shaft bearing in the Tranny. Looks like a rebuild/replacement is in order for you. The whining noise that gets higher pitched with the rpms may be your synchros as well. Better save up, I still am.

I think its the input shaft bearing. When you disengage the engine and tranny the noise goes away is sounding a lot like the input shaft bearing. If it was the throwout bearing the noise would always be there but it would get louder when you press the clutch in. If you have the money sounds like a rebuild would be the best thing for you to do.

do you think i could prolong the tranny any with a heavier weight oil,
the funny thing is that whenever the outside temperature is above 80 degrees and the car has been in the sun for a while ( not necessarily turned on or warmed up) the noise quiets down drastically

It may be worth a shot. I'm not too good when it comes to my tranny knowledge but its not like it will make it worse. Don't go too thick though.

I wouldn't mess with changing to a heavier oil (unless you're running SAE 30 or something already)...

make sure the fluid level is correct though. that'll make a big difference.
