I use 4 quarts of oil for an oil change as stated in the owners manual, but have been filing up the oil filter with oil too. Does anyone else do this? I read that starting the car w/out oil in the filter leaves a few moments where oil is not running through the engine thus lacking lube on the parts?

I use 4.0 quarts also. I don't fill up the oil filter though, nor have I heard of this technique. Every time you start your car there are "a few moments" where the engine lacks proper lubrication since it all drains down to the oil pan when the car isn't running. I'm not sure that your technique does much good, but it sure can't hurt - so have fun!!

Is it just me or are the VE engine dipsticks hard to accurately read. I like the 'cable' design of it, but the tip just isn't very user-friendly in my opinion. I don't even use it to check anymore, I just add 4 quarts & go.

It's a VERY good idea to fill the filter up w/ oil during a filter change. Normally there is oil in the filter during normal driving. If you put a dry filter in, it takes longer for the oil to start circulating on that first start up.

I'm surprised Jeff hasn't pointed out that

this is nearly impossible to do in the VG engines because of the filter pointing downward rather than to the side or up.....so I just hold my breath for a few seconds and then all is well....

He has a 93se. The filters are straight up and down. Open side up.
