Changed my belts and...

Before I changed my belts they were making a terrible squeaky noise, like a bunch of mice. So I got them changed and now I'm still hearing that noise from that area, not as bad but it's still there. The belts needed to be changed anyway, but what else could be making the noise? Or do the new belts just need to be worn in?

the bearings in the idler pulleys are probably going out. Or I guess one of the accesories or water pump could be bad too.

I would bank on one or both of the idler pulleys though...if someone overtightened the belts they will wear out faster.

Do you have any idea of how much it would cost to get done?

I bought an idler pulley from the nissan dealership last week and it ran me $52.00, easy to install.

Should I just listen to which pulley is making the noise and change that one? Or is there any other indication of a pulley going?

remove the drive belts one at a time until the noise goes away.. that will let you know which group of pullies is causing the problem. I was hoping mine was an idler pulley, but nope.. alternator bearings. ugh. least there's a place here in town that will replace the bearings for about $40.

if it winds up being the idler pulleys, press the bearing out (use a bench vice), then call a bearing supply place and order a new bearing for it. there's always a number stamped on the side of the bearing.. just take it in if you've got questions about it and they'll get you the right one. last time I changed an idler pulley bearing, it cost me $12, not $56.
