Q: Shaved antennas

I hope this is not a stupid question, but, I have checked the forums
and the howtos on several sites, and have yet to find an answer.
Does anyone, know of a good site on the net, to get info, on shaving
an antenna? I need to know, what is used for an antenna, once you
remove to factory one.

I just shaved mine yesterday. You have to have a welder and body filler.

Its pretty simple...You put a piece of metal under the hole and weld it on. Grind down the weld and use body filler to fill and smooth the body.

You could probably fiberglass it but I wanted to do it the right way and since I have a welder...you get the point.

I am going to use an amplified antenna that goes on the inside of car.

I dont use the radio much anyway.

Re: Re: Q: Shaved antennas

Well, I don't have a welder, but, I am sure, one of the body shops
near me, wont mind doing that for me. Where did you do the weld? On the quarter panel or in the trunk? If you had to grind it down, I
am assuming, you did the weld on the quarter panel.

Did you get the antenna yet? Which brand are you using, where did you get it, and was it a good price? I would be interested in hearing,
how it performs, and if you would recommend it.

Mine is going to be shaved as well. Ever since I got XM radio I haven't even turned FM on. My XM antenna will either stay on my rear deck or go on my roof after the paint job.

if you are going to have the shop do it...dont tell them how. They will know how to fill the hole and will not like someone telling them how to do their job.

I havent gotten an antenna yet...heck my car is still in pieces and stripped to bare metal at this moment.

I went by a local audio shop that a good friend of mine works at and he is the one that recomended the powered inside antenna. He said they werent that expensive.

BMW lights? What kind of morons would want BMW lights? They dont even fit right on the car.

I'm gonna shave mine, but I guess I'll have to get an inside antenna whenever I sell the car. You think they sell those antennas at just any stereo store?

Well, call me a moron, because I want them. Why, because they look
hot. My only problem with them, is that they must be mounted,
without the frame, which has the ajustment hardware. So, after
they are installed, if something happens to them, and they end
up misaimed, unless the guys at the inspection station are very understanding, and allow you the time to reaim them, you are
S-O-L.

BTW, have you checked some of the member cars? Quite a few of
them, have done the E36 conversion.

BMW lights are OK, but they would be better if the height of them matched the car. From what I hear there is a 1+ inch gap between the top of the headlight and the hood. I just prefer the look of the stockers because they fit perfect, and match the corner lights perfect.

obviously you havent seen my install of the lights. Mine not only dont have a gap but they match the contour of the hood. I swear you cant tell its not factory unless you get up close and really inspect them good and know what your looking for.

i think 2 tone primer is the most common/cool color combo yet on the 3rd gen, just ask mike(awsm66)!now if only we could get a pearl matte finish....................

My car is only bare metal silver and blue right now instead of the 5 colors it was (white, primer grey, pearl white, black, blue) lol but will be black tonight or tomorrow...spraying it with PPG DP90LF Epoxy primer (needed since I took it to bare metal...well to the E coat anyway). I will then be doing any final filling if needed and then spraying it with PPG K36 filler primer (light grey) prolly first of next week but definately before the 7 day window on the Epoxy primer. Then its blocking time.

It will be a bit before I can paint it though since I have to save up around $400 for the paint and clear.

I have really learned a lot about paint and primers lately through research and talking with the PPG rep.

oh i leave fingerprints, its alot easier to wipe off grease when there's clear on a car, but thats when you bust out the brillo.
