Popping sound!! Help

I have an automatic 94 maxima gxe. The car seems to drive fine and has been for as long as I've had it. Recently, in the past few months I have noticed a sound coming from the car several seconds after I park it and turn it off. It almost sounds like little rocks or dirt are hitting my engine. It also sounds like multiple little pop noises that are coming from the engine or the front part of the car. The popping sounds are quiet but it seems as though they are rapid as I first turn off the car and they die down eventually to further time intervals between each pop. Someone told me that it could be oil related. Is this so or if not what could this be? Thanks for your help.

I thought those noises were just the car settling.
