In next phase of my tranny rebuild (aamco for 1700 + 3 yr warranty) I had a problem with the speedometer going out (moving left to right w/ the bassline) ...mechanic told me that the computer controlling it is connected to the transmission and it will prevent good shifting...I need to replace sumthin...maybe bad wiring or sensor...but he said not to drive it too much and get it fixed ASAP ...

What should I do..take it to a dealer and let them fix it with a hefty price or should I get it fixed at the local place for less...I want to be safe on my tranny as I dished out a lot of $ for it!

It is true that ONE of the things the tranny uses to shift is the speed sensor. But if it fails it uses its revolution sensor instead.

It's your speed sensor probably. It is attached to the tranny. If you have a VG30E engine, it's located between your oil filter and the fire wall. You can see it by looking from above the engine. Removal calls for unscrewing a screw and carefully pulling the sensor out of its aluminum housing (actually the tranny case).

Questions?

hey I got this from the gen3.4mg.com archives...

" The procedure is really easy. The part is just behind your oil filter by the firewall. It is held in place by a single 10mm (I think) screw, and the electrical harness is just about 18 in. above. Just pull the old one out, and drop the new one in. BTW, make sure they send you the right one -
Courtesy was under the impression that the part number was the same for auto and stick. This is NOT true. I pulled one from a 91 SE stick in a junkyard, and the gear was the wrong size/length for my auto. The statement about the lack of a cable is correct. It is just the sensor and the wire to the
speedo. It should fix all of the problems that you are having. Hope this helps. "
