so i broke a starter....

so i broke my starter..its not like i havent had enough setbacks in this whole fiasco, the stupid stud that holes the ring terminal to provide power to the starter broke off..was tightening it, terminal wasnt tight and all of a sudden the stud snapped...what can i do to fix it? i was planning on pulling it off and bringing it to get tapped and i could just put a bolt in it instead (IMHO easier than dealing with a stud)..any suggestions?

on a lighter note, the tranny and motor are mounted, all vac and fuel lines are hooked up correctly (as shown in FSM and my friends car), bmw lights are fitted (euro projectors)...its finally coming along...should be driving it saturday but dont hold me to that, i said i'd have 500 miles on it by today.

same thing happened to me.

I just said forget it and bought a new one
$150ish

However I had just dropped in a transmission, Fidanza, and Exedy; and my old transmission was broken and filled my bell housing a little under 1/2 way full of gear oil. so my starter had a clutch material/gear oil mix, (along with some brake kleen from trying to clean it off) and I didnt really want to get that flung inside my clean bell housing.

depending on how far down it broke, you could possiably try to find a long nut for it, and a bolt/stud/etc) the same diameter, cut it to fit and make yourself alittle extension.

If you need to buy a new one I got mine last week at Advance for 90.00 bucks w/ my old core. That was by far the cheapest place around

i cant afford a new one, besides, its only a stud...the starter itself works flawlessly. its just another bunch of annoying trips to several shops before i find one that'll do what i want.

look in the yellow pages for auto electric places..

or alternator/starter/motor rebuilders. the part that broke is the solenoid stud.. it's not the starter itself.. don't know if you can replace the stud alone or not. you may have to buy a new solenoid... and at that point, it will cost about $10 more for a whole starter.

why not just drill out the stud, retap and replace? honestly i'm ready to find a good friend with a MIG welder and tack weld the terminal to the starter. i can always dremel it off when i need a new starter. i refuse to buy any new parts if i dont 100% need them.

because that stud may not be replaceable like that. some parts you can't just drill out a stud... they're molded into the part in some instances, and you'll end up ruining it befor you figure out what to do with it.

if you're dead-set on fixing it yourself, use a smaller bolt and drill about 1/4" into the old stud. if you don't go through and ruin something, tap the hole you just drilled, then use a short bolt and attach the starter cable.
