Crazy Tach

The tach on my 92 SE does crazy things. Most of the time, it rests on the zero line. Sometimes,it will suddenly either begin showing the correct rpm's or start swinging violently back and forth repeatly though the entire range of the scale before settling on the correct rpm's or back to zero. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Is there a cure?
