Help! My stereo sucks!
Help! My stereo sucks!
I posted this in the audio section, but no- one seems to visit there.
The radio in my 93 Max is driving me crazy! I have the non- Bose AM/FM/CD/Cassette and the display on the radio does not work, the Cd player rejects perfectly good Cd's,the rear speakers barely have volume, and the whole system has very little Bass. The speakers and Bass thing happen on both the radio and CD. Anyone else have this problem? ( I realize that the Bose systems do ) How difficult to fix, or replace with an aftermarket HU and speakers? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Yeah had the same problem except mine was BOSE, not that "Active" stuff... IMO don't even bother trying to fix it, not worth your time... here's what I did cause I had the exact same problem...
1) Replace the head unit (refer to craig's FAQ page in the "3rd gen FAQ" sticky)... since I didn't have time to do the harness myself, I just went to the local car audio store to had it done. I then picked up a deck off www.canadiancaraudio.com, and then did then wiring. (The deck also came with an adapter kit, which you might need to get). Since my deck was a single din I also picked up a "spacer" that holds my cellphone now.
2) As for the speakers once the new deck is installed (and the problem persists) try to test just the speakers with the wiring coming straight from the deck (and bypassing the amp), if it's shot (distorted audio) change the speakers - if not then it's the amp; (HOWEVER I DON'T KNOW IF THE ACTIVE SYSTEM IS SIMILAR TO THE BOSE WHEN IT COMES TO AMPS) in which case you should search for an amp rebuild, or you could go to your local junkyard, and see if there is one there.
Hope that helps.

My Bose stereo and speakers where in prefect working order when I pullled them from my car, was all ative. Didn't even know that there seems to be lots of trouble with them.
Like the man said go aftermarket, just buy good quility not crap. Took about 1 or 2 hrs to change over my headunit and a bit longer for the front speakers 2 or 3 days, because I modded the door pods to house 6.5" JBLs. Bog takes to long to cure. And about an hour for the rears had had to sets in there don't know if I prefer the 6x9" or 6.5" better, as I have a sub.
Don't forget to plan ahead don't buy something know that u wont need in 6 months time cause u upgrade something.

Thanks for the help, the active junk has only one amp for the rear speakers ( or so the Haynes book says. )
