AIR INTAKE ADAPTER/FILTER - Doesn't fit
AIR INTAKE ADAPTER/FILTER - Doesn't fit
Guys,
After hearing about the gains by this simple and cheap mod, I bought this item:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ADME:B:BN:US:1
The bracket that came with the unit is a universal fit mount. It has four holes, one in each corner-- and also four adjustable fit type holes.
The issue is, when I took out the factory air filter the new adapter did not fit right. Only two of the holes would line up at a time, not all 4.
I emailed the place, and they said "It's a universal fit, you should have it installed my a qualified mechanic". Not to be a ****, but if something is advertised as "87-94 NISSAN MAXIMA AIR INTAKE ADAPTER/FILTER" shouldn't it fit without modification?
I saw another one out there without the air filter part and figured I'd give it a shot to see if it was any different:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ME:B:EOAB:US:6
SAME thing. Same exact part. I must be doing something wrong, or am I? Now I have two of these frigin things ;-) ah well, if I figure it out and I can put one on my 93 and one on my 94 max's.
Thanks all,
-Leo

common mistake when people buy those Ebay filters...that is the "sqaure" Universal Nissan adpater(I think for the 240s and Altimas)...you need the larger "rectangular" version for the 300zx/Maxima... lightningmotosports.com sells it for $25 I think. the bolt holes are spaced correctly for the Maxima MAF(same as 300zx)
Thanks guys. The seller told me "> Thank you for contact us! Is that he couldn't install it because of the MAF?
> If yes, you could un-plug the MAF. Then it will be no problem. "
Not sure what the MAF is. I was hoping to not drill holes in this thing as it doesn't seem to have a heck of a lot of material on that lip-edge as it is.
Also, I noticed in a couple other posts where some of the gurus have pics of their setup-- they have a hose or something coming off the other end of the air filter and running down below. I assume for fresh/cooler air? If I just put this thing on as-is, without something like that... is it still better than the factory one?
Thanks all...

haha that guy needs to get slapped in the head for saying that. don't unplug your MAF. it's the black rectangular thingy you see bolted to the top portion of the stock air box. it has a wiring harnes on one end.
yeah i mistakenly bought that same adapter too. it's just sitting on my desk as a paperweight now til i get one made by a member on the org. if you want one, he'll make on for you for 10 bucks shipped. message LittlePiggie for more info.
the other setup is a CAI or cold air intake kit. it draws in cooler air near the fender area. cooler air means denser air which would result in a bigger combustion hence more power. or they have a open filter with a hose, like you said, on one end. not sure how effective this is though compared to a real CAI.

Fosgate Fan, thanks a lot man. Yeah, blows my mind people post this stuff for the exact year/model car and it doesn't fit. Whacked.
Yes, I would like to find out about buying one from that guy from the org, and while I'm at it-- seems like the CAI version is the way to go yes? What is the best way to go with that CAI? (best value/ease of install without special fabrication). Seeking something that would be sold as a complete kit vs. trying to rig something.
So, I now have (2) paperweights, eh? Sheeit....

well you can always sell them to someone that has an altima or whatever cars those adapters will fit on.
and yet again, LittlePiggie is making a CAI kit for the VG and VE i believe. Check this thread out http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=244826
more info will be in there.

Thanks Fosgate fan. I checked that link out. Looks like the air filter winds up down low behind the wheel well plastic. Someone posted a concern about it getting wet, which was my initial response-- but they said it would be protected by the wheel well plastic. It just seems like even if driving through rain didn't get it dirty/wet, wouldn't it be kind of a pain in the ***** every time you want to replace your air filter to take your wheel off and wheel well plastics?
I'm not as hard core as most here. I was just hoping for a cheap/easy boost over the factory air filter. If I decided to bail on a CAI, is it still worth while to replace the factory air filter with the adapter and generic filter?
Opionions welcomed. Thanks all.

make a "hybrid intake" then...it replaces the OEM plastic piping but keeps the filter under the hood. you can use an Accord or Eclipse upper intake pipe and doesn't cost more than $25-30
so a search you'll find more info

yeah an adapter and generic filter will help somewhat, but you won't see huge gains. CAI will yield more gains than a cone intake but the drawback is that it's more expensive. i'm just going to get a cone intake for the looks and sound. plus i'm a poor college student so i can't afford a CAI
as for the cleaning the filter, it'll last a good while before it needs cleaning, but it depends on how dusty it is in your area. i clean my k&n drop-in filter whenever the dirt/junk is thick as the metal mesh.

I'm working on a CAI that DOESN'T NEED A HOLE.
and it's gonna be cheaper and hopefully better than the previous version. Fosgate Fan, if you want to be the first (after me of course) to try the new design and give feedback , I'll give ya a discount

I'm working on the prototype now and soe fitment issues as well...
Oh, leojs, I'll sell you a MAF adapter for 10 shipped. metal and guaranteed to fit.

...or just pay 10 and get one that's guranteed to fit...
just drill the holes theres bearly enogh room to have 4 holes and still have meat left on the side it will work fine mine and my friends maxs have them like this with no problems if you dont want to then buy one from LP
I have seen Piggie's work on Spipedong's VE. He does a good job. Not propoganda at all.
I have also seen photos of Piggie's VG CAI. It is going to be very nice when it's all said and done.
BTW, subs1000w continue to check your PMs...

I installed a pop charger from Autozone and just used the ring inside the factory airbox. Took a little removing of exsessive parts, but work awesome and was FREE. I really want to pick up a VE CAI from littlepigge, but won't be able to for a little while. (Just order a Kenwood x969 and found out my wife is pregnant also. So it looks like the mods will stop for a while.)
