Can anyone out there give me some info on how to install a CAI on a 3rd gen max??

Yup search feature will do you fine....

but heres a little help anyways........heres an install on a 4th gen(by Max.org member Cheston Chiu), should be basically the same for our gen maxs too!

the "search feature" on this site is also very helpful and you can narrow it down to search only the 3rd gen forum, so you might find directions specifically for your model Max(vg or ve)
