How much to install tranny?

I think my tranny is dying. Im really short on cash so I think Im going to get a remanufactured one off of ebay and then when I save up more money I'll have it put in. I just want to know how much I should expect to pay to have it put in. By the way my car is a 92SE auto.

You should be able to find a trans shop to do your trans for 15-2000 installed with a warranty.
You'll be better off that way than buying through ebay.
Labor time is usually in the 8hr range.
and if there is a problem with your ebay trans you have to pay labor AGAIN. not my idea of being cost effective.
Don't forget to calculate shipping into the equation.

Yup, what he said.
you generally are better off buying the tranny from the shop that's doing the work.
on autos, you need a good shop you can trust.
with 5 spds, it's not as critical. Since I do the tranny/clutch/etc work myself, I wouldn't have a problem buying a reman tranny off ebay and doing the swap myself.... but an auto? no thanks. I'd rather pay someone else to take care of it for me.

$800 for trans
$100 for shipping (too cheap)
$560 = $70 an hour labor * 8 hrs
_____
$1460 total (on the cheap side)

trans shop total
probably $1500 with a parts and labor gauranty and someone local to fix it if it has a problem.
BTW I have seen trans shops that offer lifetime warranties on the trans. You just have to go in for their service like once a year or so.

i was this close (?) to buying a tranny for my old a** chevy from ebay. the i figured i coul have mine rebuilt for less with a one year/ 10000 mile warranty. all i can say is call around local tranny shops, find out the best price and the best warranty, id go with the best warranty coz rebuilt trannys have problems that the shop can fix for free, rather than buying an 800 buk tranny and having to pay a couple of hundred a couple of times to have it worked on.

Yeah I guess I'll save up the 1500-2000. I live directly across the street from Cottman Transmissions. So I'll call over there an see how much it will be. Too bad its going to take me like 6 months to save up the damn money. I just hope my tranny last that long. Thats what I get for screwing up my credit or else I could just finance. Oh well. Thanks guys.

You might check with the tranny shop to see if they'll let you spread out the payments a bit. When I was shopping around for mine, there were several that would split the payments up. Basically, I paid 1/2 up front (about $800) and then split the others up over the next 2 months. Cost me $50 to split it, but when it's that kind of money, it's better than nothing. Still friggin' killed me, though....hard to recover from that kinda bill..

be ware of the ebay transmissions from phoenix hard parts (remanufactured transmissions). bought one, t/o bearing doesnt fit right, 3 gears worked initially..if you're not going to be able to afford the downtime and you're not doing the work yourself, goto a local shop.
