You could always use projectors, fiberglass and lexan (or something)

You can get the Hella DDE E36 lights. They're glass and very very very high quality. You could then toss in some bi-xenon projectors fitted for D2S bulbs (don't use the stock h1 projectors, the cutoff will be kinda messed up because the bulb sits too close to the projector). Read up on HIDforum for HID retro fits. THere's a writeup on converting stock E36 ellipsoid headlights into d2s projected hid lights.

Oh no... not THAT picture again!

Still, the thought and innovation was there, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

It's still E36, but this may be in my 'mods to come' list. In fact it's near the top but we'll see what happens

one thing that disappointed me with the e36 swap was that i couldn't run over wattage bulbs because they get too damn hot.
the housing for the bulb is too small. it get's so hot that the freakin glass bulb melts. i wish i had pics of those bulbs. it was so funny to see them with the big a$$ blisters.
i got a nice aftermarket wiring harness that could handle the extra wattage but unfortunately the bulbs need more space to stay cool.
