Carpet Replacement

Ok, I have a 91 GXE, with a brown/tan interior. The interior is not really that bad for being 10+ years old, but the carpet is dirty! I've gotten a couple different suggestions...but never had anyone really back my own idea. Assuming the carpet is all one piece (is this true?), I figure I can take out all the kickpanels, center console, seats, etc. Then take the whole piece of carpet out carefully. Then, go to the carpet store, get a large square of carpet, a little larger than the stock carpet. Next, I'd lay the stock carpet on top of the new, then cut the outline. Would this work, I realize the carpet doesnt lay flat in the car, as there are many braces, bumps, etc. Has anyone else done this? Any help/pics greatly appreciated!

well just in case you didn't know...they sell pre-molded carpets for the 3rd gen on Ebay, saw it while back for like $120 might save you all the trouble of fighting to fit some "universal" carpet from a carpet store

The oem carpet is molded too. So getting flat carpet to work is gonna be some serious work. Plus, the oem stuff has the wear areas stitched in with plastic panels and has that thick foam glued under the floor areas.

Also most of the carpet is easy. But getting out/in from the consol area is a BIG pain.

i bought the molded carpet from ebay and it looks pretty good. gotta be careful where you cut but other than that it goes in nicely. i happen to have a brand new charcoal carpet that'll look great in your car that i can sell for $75 plus shipping. if you look at a piece of charcoal before it's burned thats basically the color, only a little darker. what happened was i thought the charcoal carpet would be black with white specks in it but that wasn't the case and it looked aweful w/my blue interior. so i ordered a plain black one thats in my ride now. the one i have is brand spankin new and has been kept out of the elements. let me know if you're interested.
