Brake fluid genrally doesn't need to be replaced. The Master cylinder is the big round thing on the firewall infront of the driver. You should be able see leaks if they are there.

ABS or no? (not sure what year that became available)

Umm... that is incorrect. It should be changed every couple of years or so but nobody does it in the US.

Ok, well... I'll rephrase: Here in the US, very few people know that break fluid should be changed. So, given that this doesn't seem to cause mass issues, I bet thats not your problem.

just look at the level of brake fluid in the master cylinder's reservoir. if low, just add more.

i doubt it's leaking badly. you said the brake indicator light goes on and off right? it's most likely that the brake fluid is little low. once the fluid gets below a certain level, that light will light up. the fluid can be sloshing around as you drive and the senor will think 'oh it's full' or 'fluid is low'...and will light the indicator accordingly. try adding more brake fluid and see what happens.

make sure the sensor in the top of the cap is seated properly, if you had a leak in ya master cylinder u would know your pedal height would be low and mushy would seem like u would have to put ya foot to the floor to stop the car. what is ya pedal height? also you would see a slightly clear very slippery fluid on the ground under ya car the lines coming from the cylinder are steel anyway, just run ya hands around the lines and the cylinder to see if it is wet also check the visual level also.

The first thing you should have done when the light came on was check the fluid level for the brakes.

if you refill the fluid and it gets low again, then you have a leak somewhere. it could be calipers or it could be somewhere else, a shop can take a look and let you know. replace whatever is leaking and you'll be happy.

Checking the fluid is your best bet. Check around the tank and feel around the engine for wetness. Also look for spots when you leave your car parked. Run all of these yourself before you bring the car to the mechanic and he charges you a stupid amount of money just to refill your tank

I thought the E-brake was all mechanical. 89, maybe you just need to tighten your cable.
