Might be a played out question but... 6x9s in rear deck???

i have a non bose system and i just put in a new head unit and 4x6s in the doors. any reason why i can't stuff 6x9s in the rear deck. i see that i will have to cut back some metal, but i have the tools of destruction for that

i want to cut them in and then put the gay "active speaker" covers back on for the stock look. out of sight out of mind.

I wouldnt even cut the deck. I would go to a junk yard and pick up a pair of bose brackets. The bose had 6x9 in the rear and that bracket will just bolt right up to your deck without any mods at all. best and cleanest way to do it.

not a lot of 3rd gens in my area and even fewer at the junkyard. it doesn't look to be to tough to cut in. a jigsaw with a metal blade should do the trick. most likely going to do this tonight after work so i'll post up and let you know how it goes.

its not that its hard but its that I wouldnt want to butcher up the rear deck. You also may have clearance issues with the torsion bars that hold the trunk up (they run right under where the speakers are). Its your car though so if you dont mind cutting it then go ahead (I am being honest here not sarcastic).

There are a lot of people on here that have wrecked their car and are parting out...you can probably find the brackets for cheap from one of them.

so whats the deal with the brackets then? do they allow the speaker to be mounted from the bottom instead of dropped in from the top? either way, wouldn't the hole in the deck need to be big enought to accomodate a 6x9? thanks,

jason

They are bottom mount speakers.
And there is plenty of clearance IMHO for any set of 6x9s to be mounted

Yes, they mount from the bottom. Stock bose systems have 6x9s, so the brackets are made for the speakers to fit perfectly in that location, underneath the parcel shelf (so everything looks totally stock). Even on Bose cars, the size of the hole in the deck doesn't allow for top mounting of the speakers without cutting.

It actually sounds very good. I have Infinity Reference 6x9s (under the shelf, as I had bose originally) and I didn't cut my deck.

Cardomain doesn't seem to be working right now, but I have pics of my system on my cardomain page (www below the signature). If you look above my Eclipse sub, you will see my 6x9 above it. I will try to take better pics if you want to see what it looks like.

no worries, man. i still want a sub too. just like a little more mid range from the back. the 6.9s went in with a little freindly trimming from the sawzall. a little more trimming on the underside of the factory speaker covers and it all went back on looking stock. now all i need is a small amp and a sub in the trunk.

Darn, I just sold a JL 10w3...and you are pretty close, too.

Sounds like it worked for you without the brackets. You should take pics for other guys with non-bose systems. It might be helpful in the future.

give it a try

I ripped out the Bose and replaced the rear speakers with 6x9s and they fit perfectly. If you're having trouble fitting them into your non-Bose setup, I would assume that the Bose bracket would fix the problem. I can't believe that the size difference between Bose and non-Bose mounting areas could be THAT big, but keep the reciept just in case!

back in the day, i dremeled out my pods to fit 5.25" coaxs, but you could probably squeeze a 6.5 in there..i just made plates for my 6.5"s it was easier at the time.
