Yeah or Nah on A 93 5spd
I've been looking for a 93-94 5 Spd and came across 1 the other day at a dealer. The body is good, Interior ok, only 95K on it, BUT the guy told me it has a Noisy Lifter when the engine is cold. (SO that means the engine is on its way out?) Also, it has an exhaust leak, but I'm not worried about that, cause I'm already planning for the Warpspeed...... He's asking $1995, but will go down to $1700.
He said he can get me an engine for $400, swapping it would run me about how much??
Should I jump on it or let it pass and keep searching???
Thanks in advance.

Hell Yeah!
that lifter is 99% the VTC's. Tell him $1600(or cheaper, hehehe) with cash in hand and I'm sure you'll drive it home. You could always try to swap in a new engine yourself if it really needs one, but I doubt it needs one just from experience.

if it is offer him $1200 based on the fact that it needs a motor.
even if he counters with the BS line that he can get a motor for $400 ask him what about the labor?
You should be able to walk out with the car for $1500

Very good call on that, Internetautomart and MrGone.
I would scoop that car up in a second. Tell him that "it needs a new engine" but you will figure that out on your own when you get more money. Get the car as cheap as possible.
The VTCs really aren't an issue as far as driveability. Mine have been clacking for a couple of years and it has 147k on it. You can have them rebuilt. Plus, if it only happens when it's cold, you can run 5w30 and the toyota filter and probably keep it from getting bad for the next several years.
Good Luck.
BTW, I paid $2500 for mine with 145k. It is in excellent condition, but the VTCs clack like crazy.
