Trannsmission problems.......

My Fiancee has a 1995 Maxima, V6 AT. We drove it to the store, and it was fine. Then, all of a sudden, on the way home it wouldn't shift into 3rd gear. No noise, or prior slipping, it would just rev up and up without shifting. Any ideas on what could be the problem? Any help would be appreciated, thanx.

First thing is to check the level of the tranny fluid. If it hasent been replaced in a while (30k miles), then do it.

If that doesnt cure it, then their could be a bad shift solenoid (the solenoid pack is easily replaced with out removing the tranny).

Are you sure you didnt accidentally hit the OD button? (stupid question but I thought I should ask).

Other known problems with the tranny are the nylon busings located at the ends of the shifter cable, they eventually break and fall off the car. They are only like $5 for the two of them (one at each end of the cable).

Don't listen to the people on the org that tell you your tranny is dead, there are plenty of serviceable items on the tranny.

could be a lazy atf sensor.. i have one
.. i cant do **** about it, i have to let my car warm before driving (3-5 min) because if i dont the tranny doesnt shift to 3rd ( ur problem) or it starts in 3rd and never comes out.
i later lerned that both of these "settings" are done by the atf sensor and it's putting my car in winter mode... odd problem, doesnt effect my driving at all. ( but i baby my auto)

Ok, here is what the shop told me. THe mechanic said that the cooler lines running to the tranny were clogged with metal, and that it burned up my transmission pump. He said the gears were fine, but that the rest needed to be rebuilt. He qouted me 1599.90 to do it. Does this seem right, with what it was doing in my first post? Any help would be appreciated.

The rebuild price sounds about right. My A/T rebuild was $1650.But apparently I got ripped as mine is going down the toilet again (noisy hydraulic pump and slipping tq converter).

Drop in a new or used tranny with less mileage. It'll probably be about 1200 to do and last longer than most rebuilds if serviced correctly.

That would be a good idea for him. (it's useless for me, I'm getting a new car in about 2 1/2 months).

Hey serpent, what did it cost you to have the shop diagnose your problem?
