what r they and what happens to your motor when they go bad. any helpfull links will be greatly appreciated. I just bought this maxima about 3 days ago as a daily driver to not put miles on my other "beast"; but that doesn't mean I won't be racing this car. I just love 3rd gen. maxima's.

Here is an article Jeff92SE wrote about them: http://www.geocities.com/bracecraig/...vcs-bible.html. I got that from Craig's site, which is listed under the FAQS sticky at the top of this page.

Valve Timing Control

Basically they advance the intake cams 20* for more torque. They sit on the end of the intake camshafts, where the sprockets are.

The 'top' camshaft is the exhaust, the 'bottom' is the intake (just how I have them in the box).

does VTC failure necessarily mean loss of HP too if any at all; besides the noise.

thats what mine did after startup they were quiet, then as the motor began warming up it clacked and clacked, then after its fully warm it stopped. i couldnt stand it anymore - never had a problem like that with my trans-am GTA (350cu) 400whp. (great car)

yeah you have time. go to craigs site (in the FAQs) and ground them for now if the noise is bothering you.

OR

Try a Toyota filter part number 90915-YZZA2. Some have said that this quieted their VTCs.

rebuild or get new ones later when you feel like fooling with it.

Or once they bug you so bad, you can ground them. Like I did, now they tick very quietly at startup & that's it. You'll loose a little top-end power, but making that noise go away is worth it.
