window problems

All my windows except for the driver side front have stopped working on my 1993 Maxima. I saw the thread on fixing the window regulators that solves this, but I don't hear the motor when I try to roll them up and down which seemed to be a sign that it was the regulators. Anyone had any other experiences with the obviously badly engineered power window system in the maximas? Also if you know of a how-to on the fix, that would be great. Thanks.

well if the motors are dead/stopped working, how would you hear anything?

Thanks, for answering my question with a question. I never said the motors didn't work. I said the windows don't roll down or up and I don't hear the motor. I just wanted to get some responses if anyone else had had some window trouble besides the regulators going out (I already checked out those pages you posted). If anyone can give me some advice without the smart *** comments, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

One of my windows just went out and I have yet to fix it. I have clear tape over the open part with cardboard wedged in between the window to hold it open! lol

first, you dont accidentally have the window lock switch on, do you?
if not, It could be a problem with the main window switch still locking those windows even if the switch isn't pushed in. I say this because you make it sound like all the other 3 stopped working at the same time and you cant hear any of them trying to work, correct?

The main switch gives 12V to each of the other 3 window switches so when it is 'locked', they get no power. You can use a jumper to test this out. Take out the master switch. Put a jumper wire between the white wire from the 6 position harness to the white wire of the 12 position harness. This will give power to the individual window switches and then you can test them individually at their respective switches.

You can also test out the individual motors and regulators by simply putting 12V and ground across the two wires at the connector coming from the motor (two blue wires, you'll see it pretty clearly if you take off the door panel - it's shown on that how-to page that 1989maxman posted)
12V on one wire and ground on the other goes one direction, switch the wires and it should go the other way

good luck and take it easy on 1989maxman, he was trying to help out too

Well if the windows won't go up or down, then I would logically think that your motors are shot since they are electric motors, unless they are stuck out of the channel or something, but then you would probably hear the motors struggling and eventually overheating which would lead to dead motors anyways...

Just a logical progression of thought, not intended as a question for a question.

Have fun with the regulators.

Thanks, guys that helps a lot. It gives me some ideas. I had no clue what would be the reasons for them not working (not a car guy), so I just wanted to get the facts. None of them went out at the same time but in quick succession, luckily the driver side still works. The car was a family members when the first 2 went out and I think I remember the motors still working, but I haven't really messed with it since. The other just went out. Could be a combination of a several problems. My mother had the same problem with a Nissan Sentra. But thanks again for the help. I wanted to see what I was in for before I started ripping things apart. Sorry if I took anything anyone said wrong.

If you are worried about the motors, there was a guy on ebay that sells the regulator fairly cheap (like $65 shipped apx) with the motors in them. I went this route when my Driver Door window regulator went out because the motor was pretty weak, anyway. I've had it in for a year and it's been perfect so far.

I think internetautomart or Courtesy Nissan has them at a reasonable price without the motors, but you have to call/email/ask them.

Luckily, what's going on is one of the few (and quite forgivable) 3rd gen problems that ever crops up, and it's an easy fix.

When it happened to me, I removed the door panels and the motors were fine. Just the wires were tangled so it took a while to put them back in their own grooves.

normally the cable in the regulator do get tangled up, but it's because a small plastic piece on the regulator breaks and the cables no longer stay on the pulleys like they should
