AutoZone Vs Dealership

I know that we've discussed this before but without the search we'll talk about it again. I need to do a major tune-up and I want to know what parts would be better from Autozone or the net vs. the dealership. Money is not the issue since I will do most of the work myself. I want the most bang for the buck. If NGK sparkplug wires will give me better performance than stock ones then I would like to get those, if a bosch 02 sensor is just as good as a factory one, just $30 less then I will go with that, etc. I want to get the best value since I have the funds to do this the right way. Here are a few things that I'm looking at;

02 Sensor
Spark plugs/wires
cap
rotor
fuel filter
Gaskets = dealership
Brake cylinder gasket (is leaking fluid in drum brake)
SS or regular brakelines?

If you can think of any other preventive maintenence (sp?) parts that I should replace at the same time, feel free to add to the list. I have a WSP exhaust set up and a cone filter and the rest of the mods I have are cosmetic. I've been putting this off for a minute until I had the funds to do it all and do it right so your help would be appreciated.

02 Sensor - Dealer or a NTK unit
Spark plugs/wires aftermarket is okay if it's ngk/magnecore/msd etc
cap dealer
rotor dealer
fuel filter dealer
Gaskets = dealership
Brake cylinder gasket (is leaking fluid in drum brake) dealer because they are probably pretty cheap
SS or regular brakelines? definately ss lines if you can get them. of course it will be a non-dealer item

Autozone = only good for light bulbs and a good laugh.

I would buy half that stuff at Napa because 1. they are alot closer to me than a dealer and 2. for me its cheaper than buying at a dealer.

Jeff- y the gaskets dealer? you just can't buy them in Fel-Pro for a VE but he has VG.

shawn is right AZ is a major joke

The o2 will always be NTK if you buy one for our maxs don't matter where you get it.

Depends on where the gasket is. If it's deep in the engine, I only trust Nissan parts.

BTW. Y o-ring gaskets are actually more expensive at Napa vs Nissan discount dealers.

But Napa is a decent aftermarket parts place. They seem to hold their parts quality higher than Smucks/AutoBlown etc...

I appreciate the help guys, automar I have a 92 GXE and my only discount is 25% through HNE at Tom Peacock Nissan down here but I will have to pay tax. If your prices are lower on these items I'll get them from you. Are your parts aftermarket or dealership. I'm going to be going with the dealership parts. I want to get the 4 wheel disc brakes with the SS brake lines but the set up to do the conversion just isn't cost effective considering the minimal difference in braking that one would see. I might need to start a new thread to discuss that one....

All of my stuff is "aftermarket" but a lot of the time the "aftermarket" stuff is reboxed O.E.
most parts are on my website.

Many companies make parts for maximas. Problem is not all companies make GOOD parts for maximas. Some are oem makers, some are aftermarket quality parts. Some are just plain crap.

Napa tends to use good aftermarket and oem makers for parts
Autozone/Schucks etc.. tend to use the crappy aftermarket makers

BTW. You manage to get those bbk brackets done?

I don't do mods for looks.

Ur so bad *** Jeff. I went to AutoZone home of the junk and had them pull me a set of calipers mic'd them out mad a small pattern and went fromt there. Using ur pics and a scale i found the length they had to be away from the stock mounts i believe it was 3/4" between centers, havnt actually mounted them with the calipers under the wheels but they should work.

No I don't think you are BSing. I saw your turbo pics. Nice.

I just didn't like someone copying my work so blatently. I don't make squat on them anyway but at least have the courtesy to explain your situation and WHY you are asking for someone else's dimensions.

Pics would be cool. But what they hell, they are just little brackets.

Post progess pics for the turbo, it's coming along good.

hahahahahahahahaha. You forgot balkamp. Sooo eh, Moog is crap? Fel-Pro is crap? Beck Arnley (not Anerly) is crap? I think the progress you've made on the turbo is awesome, but then comments like that really make me wonder

Please be sure to let everyone know who is going to buy your brackets.... as they probably value their life (ie. so we can avoid riding in their car). Your looking for deminsions from Jeffy, yet your not using the same material. There is just a small itty bitty reason why him and the other BBK makers are not using Aluminum for their brackets, and cost and weight is not the reason.

I like AutoZone for stuff like alternators, starters, and things with that lifetime warranty...which you never get from nissan.

For gaskets, go to ebay. I have bought full engine gasket sets OEM for $55 on there before. I have yet to see a cheaply made gasket for these engines. To my knowledge, the crappy companies must not make gaskets for them.

Another neat thing I learned recently... I just bought an old 85 Ford Ranger (beater work truck) and went to AutoZone for tuneup parts. The dist cap and rotor were actually the original ones on the engine with 142k (or 242k, I dunno) on them. They were so bad that the truck died in the parking lot, and wouldn't start. I replaced cap and wires in the lot and it fired up like new.

Anyway, while inside getting parts I commented to the guy.. "They should start making them with contacts of brass or copper." turns out they had one with Brass, and it was only $3 more.

I kinda doubt you can get the brass ones from the dealers, and I don't know if you can get them for the Maximas, but it's worth looking into if you need a cap.

Also keep in mind that parts stores are like generic food...some parts are as good as the name brand and some isn't. But remember that Kroger doesn't make any food, even if it has their name on it. They buy it already packaged their way....from a large maker of name brand food.

Same is true with a lot of your OEM stuff...Nissan doesn't make alternators, they buy them.

Stuff that breaks or wears away after time I get from autozone. Break it and get a new one. Especially axles. Electronics I would get from Nissan.

Combustions chambers on the heads were polished,and surfaces were redecked, along with the intake ports getting ported to match upperintake ports and polished. Block shot peened hot tanked fluxed and then was bored .10 with new moly rings and pistons.
