Car won't start in the rain- help

I made it through a new england winter with (snow and ice) without a problem, but now that it's spring and often rainy, my maxima won't start again. This only happens when it has been out in damp weather for a half day or more. The starter works, I can hear the fuel pump running (at least, it's making sound) and I just checked all my plug wires and they seem to be free of moisture and are making good contact with the plugs. I can't take the distributor cap off to check it without some work (the screws are frozen.) Sometimes, after I have finished turning the key, I can hear the engine's vacuum pulling in some gas and it wil try to fire. Otherwise, I have to wait until it is sunny. The car will start fine, no problems. Unfortunately, this is my only way to get to work, and I'm batting about 50% with the rain right now. Any ideas??

Hi,

This sounds like the problem I was having a few weeks ago. Check this thread:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=302379

I replaced the distributor cap and gasket (OEM parts, about $35) and so far the car has started up just fine every time, even in the rain.

Good luck,
Tony

^^^ just like we told ya Tony! Jsmith, yeah, just replace the cap and gasket. I would actually say that on top of that, slap on some silicone sealant all the way around the edge of the gasket. And oh yeah, while you have the old cap removed, make sure and inspect the ignition coil in there very carefully. Moisture often gets the oxidation process started in there as well. If those connectors are all clean and shiny, put on new cap/gasket and you will be all set!

Thanks, I tried to do a search on the subject (thinking others had at one time experienced the same) but it won't let me search either. I'll definately try the distributor and will add the sealant. What you posted sounds exactly like the problem I'm having... nice to know it won't put me in the poorhouse!
