How do I PROPERLY take care of my tranny??

So I just replaced my junk tranny with one from the salvage yard. It has "over 100,000 miles" according to the guy and that's all I know. It works great now, but I'm wondering how to take care of it to make it last. I wrecked the last one by flushing it thinking that would make it last. So are we not supposed to flush these and just drain and refill them. I haven't done anything to this one yet. Can someone please give me some advice on this. Thanks.

get a transmission fluid cooler..cheap and easy prevention right there

don't drive like a maniac

and I guess keeping a watch of the fluid and maybe changing it every 20k miles or so(thats what I used to do after my second rebuild)...nit sure if it helped, but thats what I was told

Yes...do NOT flush it! That just stirs all the gunk up and the seals begin to leak.

I flush mine every 15K (163k now), but I've been doing this from the very beginning. But if you have a transmission that hasn't been flushed frequently, it's probably a better idea to drain and refill.

umm, the best way to fix those crappy ATs is to do a 5-speed swap

While you might be able to get away with that on Dodge trucks, you absolutely CANNOT get away with that on Nissans.

You scare me.

someone descend from the flaming heavens on this, but this is about the AT, right? manuals you can flush and flush and just flush.

or is the whole thing a myth? i flush my 5spd from time to time. and it is fine.

yeah, I just caravaned up with him from Woodburn Oregon to Exit 148A (IIRC) on saturday evening

I'll send you a link to some vid's we took on the way back

Tranny cooler + 5spd will require some type of pump.

can't wait for the link to vids.

how would you patch the cooler/pump in? would you run it off the battery like you would an amplifier? i'm a dumb-a$$ with electrical ideas. i am assuming that the cooler's plumbing is sealed or self-contained and must be pumped around itself, ie, it ain't running coolant through the engine block or tranny itself. is this correctly vague?

probably every 25k , don't have FSM here.
Also add a bottle of Lubegard Red to the tranny when you drain and fill.

Eh...? What the heck? I was talking about NOT flushing it so as to prevent leaks. BTW, I am used to scaring people....I am 6' 3" 260lbs!

Brian, thanks for the Lubegard idea. I am going on a long road trip. Will be sure to add it prior to leaving.

If you have a leak, fix it. A leak is alot cheaper to fix than a busted tranny from running on burn't tranny fluid.

I bet my dad can beat up your dad.

Brian, I'm still skeptical...

So do you think I should drain and refill the fluid now since I bought this tranny from a junkyard and it could have sat there for the last five years for all I know?

There's no F-ing way they put new fluid in it.

Stop by your local trans rebuilder and chances are you'll see bottles of a red trans additive on their shelf.
Sometimes it's Lubegard sometime's it's a "Generic" branded version of it.
