6 hours C/V joint project

Anyone ever change there Passenger side C/V joint/drive shaft. A word to the wise, give yourself at least 6 hours too do it. I just finished up, this thing was a real pain in the arss. There is no room to work a ratchet or a wrench, and seperating the coupling, hah, that along takes 2 1/2 -3 hours alone. I'll post some pics when i get back from work tommarrow.
p.s. the only good news for the day is its done, works good, and it only cost me $60. =) not all frowns and busted knuckles

yeah those 3 bolts that hold the axle in are a pain to get at plus the axle is usually rusted into the mount

yeah, when MrGone and I did my clutch, it seemed like we (well, mostly Shawn) had the axles out pretty fast. Of course with all the little things that happened with the tranny/clutch in the meantime, it took us until the next day to put them back in

<- hates those 3 bolts, lol.

$60, Where did you buy it? (junkyard or parts store?) Just curious because I'll probably be replacing mine soon, and I cant remember how much they go for at Napa.

It was $60 dollars from Advance auto, it was also a rebuilt. And really the whole major problem was those three bolts, and seperating the coupling. And yes it was my first time. SO i guess i was a virgin to the whole C/V operation untill yesterday =/

the key to getting the PS axle out is to get those 3 bolts off then move the strut assembly and that crap out of your way so you can line the axle up straight..then just yank on it from there...i messed around w/ mine for sooo long then I tried that and it came right out w/ no problems.

Did both sides this weekend, didn't take that long. And my friend and i were virgins to installing the cv axles too. It went smooth overall, except for those three bolts, man, wasn't too hard getting off but putting back on. I was so irritated took me over a hour to get them back on. That top bolt kept ****ing me off, but somehow i got it back on. But now the side my friend did the drivers side i guess we either got the wrong seal, or he didn't put it on right, cuz now im leaking like a **** load of that royal purple synthetic tranny fluid. Now i got to take the drivers side back apart and do it all over again.

You probably don't have it pushed in all the way. It will still function but if it's not pushed in, it will leak like a waterfall. lol

Are you guys talking about the three bolts that is sorta under the strut mount? They didn't seem too hard with a good breaker bar and some PB Blaster ;-) that's when I replace my clutch.

lol..dude, you have no idea. the bolts in question are right above the cross member in a very horrible position. I doubt any car has gotten as insulted as mine did when i was trying to change it.

An air hammer works great to separate the bearing coupling.

The 3 bolts are much easier the second time around!

Did you put some anti-seize on the new axle to prevent it from rusting in place just in case it has to be replaced again?
