VTC's from hell...

I have had my VTC's grounded since Feb. 2003 and thankfully, they have been pretty much silent. However, my ABS actuator went out last month and my Max sat at the shop for about a week and a half. Ever since I got it back, they clatter like nothing I have ever heard! No matter how long it warms up, 1000-1500 RPM's produces a clicking that can be heard a block away. It's freakin' embarrassing. I tried ungrounding them and it didn't seem to make a difference. I checked to make sure the wire is getting a good ground and it is. Any thoughts? Also, has anyone acually hurt their engine by letting the VTC's go too long?

grounding does not permanently stop them from clacking.
