sticky accelerator

After I haven't drive my car for a few hours my gas pedel becomes really stiff. I have to give it some more pressure at which point the car will usually lurch forward becasue I've broken through whatever was causing the pedel to stick and end up reving the car. After "breaking through" the first time, it won't happen unless I let the car sit for another 7-8 hours. This happens in any gear and you can feel the sticky pedel with the engine on or off. Rght now, I just hit my gas pedel first before turning on the car so as not to rev the engine unnecessarilly.

Where are the attach points for the gas pedel - I ant to spray some WD40 on the parts so they don't stick. I can clearly see a few under the dash, but after that it disappears and I don't want to start ripping apart stuff if not needed. Can the throttle cables stick? I'm going to clean out the throttle body when I have a chance, but not sure if that can cause the pedel to stick like this.

dirty throttle body can definitely cause this condition
might not be your problem for sure, but definitely a good place to start

hope that's it. I didn't think the butterfly plate could get stuck so bad like that with the throttle response being fine otherwise.

guess I have something to do after I get home tonight.

Theres one more place to check also. I'll try to describe it. Under the hood, the "thing" on the end of the throttle cable that has the spring(coil) on the back of it that makes it go back if you were to push it forward to rev the engine.....Spray WD-40 on the spring part cause every old car I had, this got rid of the stickiness.

probably not the case this time around but check your floor mats too. they are very common cause for throttle pedal troubles.

Had this exact same problem.

Where the butterfly spring is on the throttle body, you will notice a notch where when it is in the fully closed position it will rest on a SET screw. This set screw for whatever reason backed off, and the spring butterfly assembly no long rested on the set screw thus causing it to bottom out and stick.

Simply screw the set screw up further untill the butterfly assembly rests on it.

You will know better what I am talking about when you look for the tiny little screw below the butterfly spring assembly (where the throttle cable wraps around).
