Alternator charging amps are low?
Hi all!
I got a problem recently. My old battery totally died on me, so I had to tow my 89 Maxima to the next AutoZone shop. They changed the battery and checked the charging system. So instead of 90 Amps that the battery (Duralast 24DS) needs the alternator gives only 28 Amps. They recommended to change the laternator which is $80 plus I have to pay for the labor (got quoted for around $100) - all because you have to do it from underneath and I don't have the possibility to lift the car securely
So if anybody knows, can it be just bad brushes? If so how to change/clean them? If not - is it possible to change an alternator just on a parking lot?
Any opinions are greaty appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, AutoZone had this device to check everything concerning battery operation. So they put it on, and at 2K rpm the alternator was giving only 28Amps tops. I think that's a little bit far from normal. Am i right? I'm not saying it should be 90 constantly
