RPM problem

I drove my 1992 nissan maxima on the highway yesterday and it does something very freaky. I was doing about 85mph, the rpm was around 2.000 and it just jum to 2500 really quick and come back down to 2.000 rpm. I drove around 30 mile and it does that 4 time. Anybody know what the problem is, what caught it. My friend say it may be come from the tranny cable.
One more question does anybody know what size my Flex pipe is. It broke today so my car sound like a tank right now.

maybe its time for a tune up..as a prev. maintenance..check and replace where needed..also list ur mods that u have currently on ur car. i have a similar problem with mines and it was the maf sensor..since i rigged up an adaptor for the filter b4 my hybrid cold air, the filter came loose causing a weird idle on the highway.also post what type of max u have..this will help

I have a 19maxima GXE. I don't have alot of mods done ony car right now. I got a hybrid cold air like your . may be we have the same problem. I just tune up mine car. New spark plug, spark plug wire, new water pump, new radiator. What else do i need. I don't know if this from the exhaus or what but after the car idle down when i star it in the morning, it seem like the car is joking. it make a couple wire noise. Oh i will change the O2 sensor soon when i have the money for it.

for it to jump up like that either the torque converter is unlocking at random times or the tranny is slipping. in either case, it sounds like a transmission problem which is never good. may take it to a tranny shop and see what they say. knowing these trannies... i'd say its on its way out. hopefully not though.

I don't know if is it the tranny tho. It only jump when the RPM is in 2000. If i speed up until the RPM is in 2500 then it whon jump anymore. But i will take it to a tranny shop. If i need to change the tranny then i may as well get a manual tranny. Do you know which tranny should i get for my car.
thank
