Hahah Irony.

Hey guys,

As some of you know, I've had a noise problem in my 90 Max SE, having this horrible knocking noise in Park and Neutral.

After talking to a few people (namely my transmission specialist), I was convinced that the problem lied in the Torque Converter. So it was replaced and everything was packed back up.

Well, I met my 'final deadline' of getting it put back together before the Goddard Park Nissan Meet this past weekend...got it back on the road Saturday Night. Drove my friend home from the meet and on my way up this hill near his house my transmission keeps slipping. "Oh Shiznit" I say to myself, as I opt to take a less-inclined route back home.

Get the car on the highway only to find out that I now no longer have overdrive either. So while I'm cruisng up the interstate in third gear (O/D switch off), about 4800 RPM and About 10-15MPH under the speedlimit, waiting anxiously for the next exit so I could take the backroads all the way home. Car doesn't do to bad until I get on this hill near my house that can't be avoided.

My father brought it back down to the transmission specialist yesterday...guess it's really the transmission now

Here's the cool part. I got it in my garage now, drained out my tranny fluid before taking out the axles....bear in mind this tranny fluid has about 3 days and about 100-200 miles on it...it is the most disguisting color of maroon/brown, little metal flakes in it, smelling horrible, and oh yeah the tranny drain plug is covered in metal slivers on one end. The fluid is actually two-toned...I can see a different shade in rings inside the pool of fluid.

Anyways the transmission is on it's way out for the second time in about a month, I'm gonna pick up another tranny for $350 from the same yard I got the engine for my 300ZX out of...which is still running fine (well..the engine is at least...the rest of the car is ****), and due for a new timing belt. I hope to reuse the torque converter (unless someone here tells me that is taboo), which also has about 100-200 miles on it...so long as I can get the wretched tranny fluid out of it.

BTW it was Valvoline Maxlife Dexron III.

Later guys, any input on picking out a tranny would be great since I'm told he has a few of them there for that price. Anything short of portable internet and a carfax subscription would be helpful

You can reuse the converter if you want after giving it a thorough power flush.
I personally recommend against it, as you saw metal shavings and those may have damaged the internals of the converter. and to me spending $100 on a new converter is cheap insurance

after getting metal in the converter its not a good idea to put it back. You may talk to the transmission place and see if they can flush it good enough for them to be satisfied with it but again instead of paying them $50 (or whatever...I honestly dont know) to flush it just buy a new one.

I would just see if the yard has a car with a manual tranny and do a swap...that will solve your torque converter problems.

If I could find a donor car and a clutch kit for less than the cost of the a/t and a tc...i probably would...for the sole reason that my friends wouldn't be able to drive it

OK so the transmission came out today...was a bit of a chore getting it since the damn torque converter decided to stay on the engine instead of inside the transmission...i'm thinking it's because I wasn't here when it went back together last time and they didn't put any grease on the T.C. nipple. All in all we got the transmission out in about half the time (maybe even less) than it took us to get it out last time...not bad.

Tomorrow I go tranny shopping at the junkyard...hopefully i'll find a good one. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to bring a 1/2" and maybe a 3/8" ratchet with me to pull the drain plug so I can see if there's any metal shavings on it. AFAIK the drain plug is magnetic so that it would keep any metal shavings from recircuilating into the fluid.

Later Guys,
Fred.
