Front Wheel Studs and Lug Nuts

My mechanic informed me that my left front tire has only 3 lug nuts holding it. How do you install the lug nuts? Is this a DIY stuff? What special tools do i need?

Secondly, he also indicated that i need 2 studs on the same tire... is the stud part of the lug nut? and what is involved in changing both?

thanks - Noela

you screw the nuts to the studs. if you only have 3 lug nuts that means you're missing 2 studs.

the stud gets pressed/hammer/pulled into the hub.

how much effort is required in replacing the studs.... the mechanic wants about $50 to replace the studs and the nuts.....is it worth it... or is it something i can just buy and bolt on?

best - Noela

Hey Noela..
You can most likely do it yourself, but I'd say you pay him to get it done...but watch him as he's doing it so you know how to, just in case it occurs again. Nothing better than watching/learning in person while it's done. g/l

If you know how to do a brake job, you can do the wheel studs. you have to remove the caliper and rotor in order to get to the wheel hub, then after that it's a couple wrenches and a hammer.

studs are about $1.50 at most parts stores, and lugnuts are roughly the same price. so you *could* fix it for about $6 total, plus your time if you want to do it yourself.

I have 10 barely-used studs from the dealer. I can send you a few of them for just the cost of shipping. I replaced the studs on my car, but I borrowed my mechanic's stud installer tool which was very nice and made the process much easier (rather than the whole lug nuts and washers method).
