Today, I made the attempt at getting to my door speakers. After getting out the few screws that were there, there was something still holding the panel on in the vicinity of the armrest/latch. What's holding it on?
In the door, is the original 4x6. After I get the panel off, how do I put in a different size, say 5.25 or 6.5?

there are some screws hidden...a couple are under the door handle...remove the little piece with the screw driver or something and you should see them...2 are in there i think...

I did that. 1 of them didn't have anything behind it to catch. The other one I didn't remove because of the orientation of the screw., It was pointed in a downward direction, which I didn't think was holding anything on.
Know anything about the speaker sizing stuff?

Both screws that hold the door pull have to come out, remove the pull and there is another one under it that also has to come out, it is hidden until the pull is removed.
This is on a 3rd gen Max. The speaker size is 4x6 for non bose but, 5 1/4 I think for bose, I have the bose. I spent some time with a Dremel tool and made 4x6 Polks fit the stock Bose pods.

the search function on this forum and the audio/electronics forum would prove to be amazingly quick and informational. You oughta try it sometime.

When you get the screws out, you should remove the stock housing and rewire your speakers. I had the bose system and I rewired it since the stock wire was pretty skimpy. I have an enclcusre that I'm not sure if non-bose have, but, I used the front part of the enclosure as a mounting bracket for my speakers (6.5"). I just cut a hole that fit thhe speaker, put a rear foam baffle on it, and screwed it in. I'll get some pics up for you. Simple, but it took a few hours!

Yes, how deep were they? I had a salesman tell me that I wouldn't be able to fit the Rockford 6.5's in the door. What't the max depth that will fit?

I put 6.75" Pioneers up front with a depth of 2 5/16". I also have foam speaker baffles around those so it comes out to aroud 3" of depth. In order to use all of this depth, I had to build a speaker pod that stuck out 1.5" from the door. So in all, there is about 1.5" of depth from the sheetmetal on the door to the window, which you will have to be able to put down, something that is very important. I found the easiest way to test speaker mounting positions was with the window down to ensure proper use of the window. Also, when you get to putting that door back on, which is a big pain in the butt, keep the window down and it will be easier to see what you are doing and get the stupid felt part of the door over the little metal hooks at the top of the door. Anyone who has taken the door off knows what I am talking about.

ey, were the 6.75 a perfect fit in the back? i installed some kenwood 6.5 and they were too small, so i could really only screw one screw in on the speaker and just pad the rest of the speaker lip so it wouldnt vibrate on the metal...

The rears are 6.75"s so yes they were a perfect fit. The only thing I did custom in the back was adding a little dynamat to calm the vibrations down.
