Charging issue
Ok so i was driving tonight in the rain and my ABS, battery and brake light all came on. So I pulled out my DMM and measured the voltage on the battery with the car running. I pulled a 11.9 v signal. I reved the motor but it didnt do a thing and still read 11.9. i checked the belt and it was still connected to the alt. I heard somewere on the forum about someone getting there alt wet and having a chargin issue. Any help, comments or w/e will be greatly appreciated. i am already going to miss class tomorrow because of this so I am going to try and get it fixed fast. Thanks in advance

The alternator should be giving around 14.4v - 11.9 a little low, so suspect possible alternator problem. I haven't had a problem with a wet weather, but had mine die a month back, with no warning lights at all! Luckily I got another one from a junkyard for NZ$23 :-)

I wouldn't go the bone yard route, instead I would find a local parts store that has a life time warranty on alternators and keep your receipt because there's a good possibilty (not always) you will be returning the store to honor your warranty. Unfortunately that's how it goes, most (not all) parts store alternators are returned for what ever reason. But at least you're not shelling out money all the time.

i'm only life were so fkn simple. battery wasn't charging on my old 93 escort. read about 12 volts. i went through 3 different boneyard alternators and each one tested great when running off the car tests. but on the car, each one posted about the same voltage as the original (12v) so i had to chalk up another problem with the car. as of now this escort i have out in front: 1. temp guage reads inaccurately even after replacing sending unit AND guage, 2. cooling fan has never switched on as long as i've owned it. 3. battery won't hold charge 4. engine misses on acceleration using new spark plugs and wires.
makes me want to take a sledgehammer to the stupid car just thinking about it.

Had a little problem last night. The battery, abs and brake light all came on again. The lights on the dash got soo bright and my headlight bulbs blew out. I pull off on the side of the road and measured the voltage. It read 17.5 v . I turned the car off and looked at the alt and messed with the wires. Apparently I didnt have the plug fully engaged and it backed itself out. I thought i felt it and heard it click but it was probably just the housing on the wires crinkling. I pushed it all the way in this time and got some new bulbs. Everything is good now.
